Re: Fording depth
Thanks for the tips. I really just wanted some extra margin. In muddy water there is always a hole to be discovered even after walking the crossing first. I have had to replace transfer case and hub bearings on a Toyota FJ40 even after a knee deep crossing since they did not see fit to install breat...

Fording depth
Searching for any information on modifications for river crossings. Ideally I would like to increase the fording depth to 500mm. This extra 100mm would make a big difference in available destinations in the Victorian high country through the year. Rather than trying to waterproof a distributor, I wo...

Re: Front End Knock
So .. 1) No knocks when no diff lock on either. 2) You can hear the front & feel through the steering. Either diff lock would put a strain on the gearbox which is a common element to front & rear. Maybe any shock could travel forward through the spine drive shaft and be felt and heard at the...

Re: Front End Knock
Might just be very loose gravel breakaway on diff lock ? Try it on wet clay.
Also, how would a dodgy spider gear in the diff carrier show up ? It might growl like a bearing under normal use. That would be a cheaper ailment than a cv or pinion. Can't think of any other things to try.
Good luck.

Hi Danny,
I have bought parts from them before. Its funny how you forget what is on your doorstep.
Both guys crack me up, and very friendly if not too busy to spend time chatting. I guess the proof of their enthusiasm is that they both use Haffys on their farms.
Cheers, Rob

Re: Windscreen
Hi Danny, Picked up a good straight frame from the Italian Job today. Just have to cut a small section out which has rusted. This is a lot better than trying to fix up a screen that looks like it has been rolled, straightened with a hammer and stick welded at 400 amps like the one on my 700APT. The ...

Windscreen
Looking for a windscreen or frame to make my 1974 700APT roadworthy.
Alternatively, if anyone has had steel channel folded up then I could fabricate one.
Located in Melbourne.

A tow bar is a very good idea.
Especially if you ever reverse into a low tree stump. It saves a bit of engine housing damage !

Re: crown wheel +diff
Hi Markus,
I can't get up to Sydney in the foreseeable future.
Could it be dropped at a PO or a local Pack-Send courier office (who can pack it as well and save anyone the trouble) ?
Cheers,
Rob

Re: Brake threads
Hi John, I have replaced the Haflinger master cylinder with a VW one of the same 19.00mm bore. However, it does not have any plugs with it to blank off the extra holes. I have a plug choice of BSPT or NPT. I have happened to try out a US sourced VW master cylinder kit from which the piston would not...

Brake threads
OK ... maybe a silly question. I am using a VW master cylinder. Is the master cylinder pipe threads 1/8 BPST or 1/8 NPT ? The thread profiles are 60 and 55 degrees and I don't want any leaks by using the wrong ones. This may not be a simple answer because I have sourced VW brake cylinder kits from t...

Re: roll cage & bumper
Hi Garry, Thanks for the photos. I am considering a substantial roll bar at the cab rear and bars extending forwards along the side rails to the front to resist some front impact. The body underside on my 700APT has some pretty substantial brackets in the PTO area that would be a good foundation rat...

roll cage & bumper
Hi, Does anyone have links to photos of a combined roll cage with bull bar ? I have just spent a long summer holiday on trails in SE NSW and number of near head-on crashes was alarming. There has always been a tendency for off-road drivers to go too fast around blind corners using up all of the narr...

Re: Haflinger in Frankston (Melbourne)
I think it is a case of only existing Haffy owners appreciating the amount of work and expense to get a cheap rusty one up to this state. Sadly, existing Haffy restorers probably have enough of them already. Sold with just one bid for the listed price. I would have liked to have bid but with 3 other...

Re: Haflinger lacks power
Hi John, Not sure about the choke & downhill issues but the governor is yet one more variable to eliminate. Mine was disconnected by the last owner claiming it limited the power too much, however it was a two setting PTO type. Basically the standard item with an extra spring and preload setting....

Re: Haflinger lacks power
Hi John,
Is it the governor ?
If it is a PTO model then there are two settings adjusted by a lever on the governor.
Cheers,
Rob

Re: Haflinger lacks power
I was not trying to offend you. I was not referring to power absorption by the pump. These are very low back-pressure pumps that can barely push enough fuel into the float bowl to start even after fitting a new diaphram. If the pump is leaking backwards excessively then putting your foot down while ...
