Re: Drivetrain Rattle in Neutral.

Is it possible the rattle is nothing more than gears being rattled by varying angular velocity from the engine at idle? What happens when you increase idle, or reduce rpm?

404 Unimogs are notorious for this rattle, and they have a smooth 6 cylinder engine. Maybe there is nothing broken.

Re: Wanted Short Tilt/Bache/Hood call it what you will

I suggest we start a cross reference on part names. The language barrier is killing me :-)

You are talking about the soft top, right? Fume curtain, is that the vertical canvas at the rear of the cab? Logical!

tnx,

Re: Cleaning nuts and bolts on mass

Do you have Walmart over there? I use their Super Clean concrete cleaner. It is a great degreaser plus it seems to have a little acid in it to help clean the concrete. I even use it for paint prep, Diluted. This stuff took the paint off my Craftsman tool box when I tried it full strength! Putting th...

I can confirm 10mm x 1.5 as originally found on my NA model, 1968.. I replaced them with 12 x 1.5.

Driving to the Treffen would be the 'main event' IMHO :-) I really enjoy road trips in slow vehicles.

Re: Found on Ebay .co.uk- Haflinger thing

Curiosity: is the 1900 VW engine a replacement for a Haflinger engine, or does it share some components with the Hafi engine?

thanks

Re: BN2 Heaters

As someone with a seemingly DOA BN2, I would LOVE to see that info posted! Thanks in advance! Me Too! Just yesterday a friend was getting a ride in the Haflinger and ask 'what's that thing?, pointing to the BN2. Once I got past "It's a gas fired heater", I admittedly knew nothing about it...

Re: Oil Filter Cannister

Are you asking about a spin-on upgrade? My Hafi is still the old type and Napa 1314 works in my canister. Do you have NAPA auto parts stores over there? I believe Jim Molloy suggested that replacement number, as well as Mann H 601 and Mahle OX 42. A search for those numbers here on the forum should ...

Re: Adjusting shift linkage

.... the porridge stirring feel of old 8-) That describes mine exactly! But at least my Haflinger shifts into reverse and 1st now, which it would not when I got it. Sounds like I need to disassemble the mechanism and replace some wear parts. Marking the connection flange in the shaft with an index ...

Re: Engine tune up - rolling road and carb

Hi John, Mine is hard to push too. I work on a concrete floor and I have to work to move it. But, outside on gravel it rolls easily. I think that points to the gravel allowing the contact surface to squirm, reducing tire friction. I'd be glad to get some 'push' numbers. I don't think the number will...

Re: Engine tune up - rolling road and carb

John, mine bump starts quite easily. Doing some chores along a sloped gravel road a few days ago, I wanted to save the Dynastarter and bump started a couple of times. I think I used fourth gear.

Any engine with provision for a hand crank 'better' be able to bump start!

The K&N filter #E-2330 fits fine in my 1968 NA model. It is a lifetime filter so the higher price might be justified.

Was there a standard hub ratio for the North American versions, both Pathfinder and pre-Pathfinder (as mine is)? My hubs do not have numbers stamped that I can find, and i just scraped the paint off three of them :-( LOL

Re: Home made bead braker

A lot depends on how long the tyre has been on the rim. The longer it has been on the rim the more likely it is to have vulcanised itself to the rim, making it harder to take off. Some tyres I have been able to jump up and down on and the bead has broken with out any trouble. I just found that it w...

With John's great help, the following numbers are apparent replacements for the Haflinger paper filter: Fram/CA641PL K&N E-2330 Purolator AFP56 MANN C1427 I found the K&N filter available on both Ebay and Amazon and have one on order. Posted measurements are correct. I'll verify when it arri...

Re: Home made bead braker

Ingenious!

A Highlift jack bottom shoe pressing down on the tire, and the 'hook' being jacked up under something heavier than a Haflinger(!) will also do the job.

Re: Oil Bath Air Filter

Hi John, Thanks for that info but I tried to find one of those filters and it's not available 'over here', apparently. My closest NAPA Auto Parts is very obliging to look up stuff. In the case of this Fram CA641PL, not only did they look and found nothing, but turned their catalog book over to me to...

Re: Oil Bath Air Filter

Hi John, Garry, We are in agreement on most of the points. No doubt there would be no reason for the paper filter after the oil bath if the oil bath were perfect. But, I still suspect the Haflinger paper filter is 'special' with better filtration than most paper filters. In conjunction with the oil ...

Re: Oil Bath Air Filter

This thread has been around a while. Was there any resolution as to why the added oil bath filter restricts the engine? An oil bath filter obviously should not provide any more restriction than a good clean (note clean!) paper filter. In fact, it will continue to provide free-flow air long after a p...
