Re: Another interesting day
Hi Julian & John, Does John's truck sit at near level height (front to rear)? If not it may be possible that the spring mount cups have become bent. For reference, here is a photo of my truck with new light rate springs and an original dealer showroom photo from 1967. Notice the clearance betwee...

Re: Another interesting day
Hi John, I believe Garry is on the mark and that you have the correct springs installed on "Lurch". There were three different spring rates available for Hafs. The lightest spring rate was supplied on all standard pattern Hafs. The medium rate springs were supplied on the US Pathfinder ver...

Re: Tacho
Hi Julian, Sorry to hear of your woes with the VDO tach. Perhaps they have another version of that type which might work better in a Haffy application. My tach does not have the DS logo but I noticed that the latest offerings do. I agree, not ideal but could likely be easily removed with a little di...

Hi Dave,
Have the shift forks been adjusted properly on the shift rods using the transmission jig?

Hi Julian,
Sorry that this isn't a great photo but here's where my tach ended up (top right of pic). It's easily within my field of view at all times and sort of looks period correct as an original accessory .
Cheers,
Steve

Re: Haflinger lacks power
Hi John, I also have 2.22 ratio gearing and can reach 48mph on flat road. I've actually made 55mph on a good downhill run but I don't recommend it as it is quite unnerving with twitchy steering. I typically hold my cruising speed at near 40mph and the Haf seems to be very happy and stable with that....

Re: Tacho
Hi Garry, I'm very happy with the Drag Specialties tach that I mentioned at the earlier in this topic. It's face and pointer are very similar to the Haf's original VDO instruments. My tach came with a little mounting bracket that I bent 90 deg. and bolted to the passenger grab handle so I didn't nee...

Re: An Interesting Haffie Day
Hi Garry, Your clutch noise is likely the clutch release bearing due to the clutch cable being a little too tight. Try backing the cable adjustment off by a few turns and see if the noise goes away. There needs to be about 1/4" of free travel in the clutch lever to prevent the bearing from cont...

Re: An Interesting Haffie Day
Hi Garry, It looks like you had a great day out and about (apart from the wheel incident  ). Great to see you're getting a chance to shake out the dozens of pesky gremlins that tend to find their way into rebuild projects. Here's a tip that I use regarding Haffy wheel nuts as I've had mine loos...

Re: Tacho
Hi Julian, I just had a read through the instructions for your tach on the VDO website. It's interesting that the settings available only describe them as "Ducati" or "Rotax" with no real mention of the differing characteristics between them. I'd guess that the DIP switch setting...

Re: Haflinger lacks power
Hi John, I couldn't agree with you more in regard to the Weber mechanical fuel pump. I've encountered many more problems with electric pumps on off-road vehicles than with original mechanical designs. Besides, rebuild kits for the Haffy's pump are quite reasonably priced and much easier to install t...

Re: Device for moving/rotating the platform
Hi Constantin, A fairly simple design for adjustable vertical bars might consist of two sections of concentric square or round structural tubing of reasonably close fit to each other. These tubes would have multiple cross drilled holes at approximately 25mm spacing for insertion of a hardened lockin...

Re: What is this bracket for?
Hi Garry, Although that would work it's not what the tube was designed for. You have a late production airbox that is designed for reduced emissions by circulating crankcase gases back through the motor intake (closed loop venting). This tube would have a rubber hose connected to the oil filler cap ...

Re: Device for moving/rotating the platform
Hi Constantin, I sure could have used your rotisserie design when I restored "Murphy". Maybe you'll have the design complete by the time I start my next project. As a suggestion you could make the vertical pillars with adjustable height to allow for changes in COG as the platform work prog...

Re: Haflinger lacks power
Hi John, Which carb model is fitted to your Haf? The Zenith can be a real stinker to get tuned just right. What is the condition of the carb base gaskets? It sounds like your cleaning has helped some but there may be other issues. Then again, maybe not. What hub gear set is in your truck? You may ha...

Re: What is this bracket for?
Hi Julian & Garry, To answer your questions: - Yes, it is just straight (neat) petrol in the bottle - I don't recall the exact wording of the instructions for injecting the petrol but I think it suggested that the air duct must be lifted from the carb body. I don't know of any other means to pri...

Re: What is this bracket for?
Hi Julian & Garry, This bracket is for the cold start petrol priming bottle. The theory was to squirt a little petrol into the carby throat to ease starting in extreme cold weather. Here's a photo of the bottle. Later models were changed to a plastic bottle. The nozzle reverses into the bottle f...

Re: Hello All - Garry Here
Hi Garry, Congrats on getting your Haf licensed for the road. Your truck looks very smart in the photos. It sounds like the motor mods make it a little more comfortable to drive on the highway hills. My engine is completely stock and reaches similar speeds to yours but climbing highway grades usuall...
