Re: Lurch got bitten by the dreaded tin worm

Now the question is, how do I get rid of it? John Hit it with a hammer. ;) That's a thankless task that you have ahead of you John - still, it'll be worth it when you're done and it has a fresh lick of paint. It's a satisfying feeling knowing that you've halted (or at least slowed down) the rot.

Re: Which Oil?

Dave - per the earlier threads on here, personally I would go for a fully synthetic Castrol Syntrans/Syntrax for the advantages that they offer; they are pricy mind. EP90 is what is recommended in the manual, though they do say to go to for an 80W if the temps are cold (not likely to be an issue in ...

Re: The 'Off-Road' picture thread

Glad you and the Haf are OK John! Great to see it in action, I must try and get some video clips when I'm out and about.

I've done the same myself, it's not a nice feeling when it starts to go!

Cheers

Yes, looking good, congrats on your progress!

I notice that you don't have the governor fitted - are you planning running without one or going with an alternative?

Re: The 'Off-Road' picture thread

Hi John - no problems with side slopes during that event at all - my sphincter works very well as an early-warning tool of impending tippingness and at no time was there as much as a tingle.

Since I've had the rims banded to 6" it's felt a lot more stable.

Re: The 'Off-Road' picture thread

It was the first trial of 2017 today, and to make a change from this time last year when it snowed, the day was clear and bright. There was a decent turnout with what seemed like a gaggle of Suzuki Jimny's and SJ413's; the little Haffy did well, consistently scoring lower points than the competition...

Re: Altered Lurch's exhaust system

Hi John - that looks like a tidy job; was it mild-steel that you used? If it was you might want to get some paint or coating on them to prevent them rusting out. I don't have heat exchangers so my system is quite different - fortunately it was fitted with a vertical stainless silencer when I bought ...

Re: The 'Off-Road' picture thread

Poor old Lurch will be last even if we manage it - 4 mph max in crawler! When faced with these circumstances I just smile and remember the old fable of, 'The Tortoise and the Hare'. ;) Good to see you getting some events in - I find it keeps you involved and engaged with the vehicle a lot more. May...

Re: The 'Off-Road' picture thread

Does your lot find it strange that a 40 year old vehicle should be as capable as their 4 / 5 year old chopped about Range Rovers and lifted Jimny's? Well John, at another club event this w/e and the wee Haf struggled a bit where the bigger 4x4's put their treads - yes, I was making no forward progr...

Re: AccuSpark Rev Limiter

Hi Kerry, the main reason I did it was to remove the drag on the engine from running the belt and the governor; it probably didn't free very much (and it wasn't noticeable), but hey, when you haven't got much HP to start with, every bit helps! Also, I figured that removing the spindle and butterflys...

Re: The 'Off-Road' picture thread

Nice to see the videos John - I've been given a GoPro so am currently experimenting - once I get the editing software set-up I might post something up. Meanwhile, here's some more (poor quality) photos from our event this w/e; the wee Haflinger did well, getting to all the places the full-size 4x4's...

Re: The 'Off-Road' picture thread

Nice write up and photos Garry! Seeing that snow brought back memories of our winter and made me shiver - it's the middle of summer here now in the UK and although it's not that dry it's a lot warmer than where you were. Great to see you using it off-road; it's well worth pulling of the wheels and t...

Whoops! Yes - apologies I was talking about the Zenith carb - can't help with the Weber I'm afraid.

Re: Weber carb, weird slight throttle response after clean

It's possible that there's a blockage in your pilot jet(s) - they're located under the small cover at the side of the carb facing the rear. They have very fine jet holes - don't try and use anything solid like wire or a drill, you'll likely damage them. Mine were prone to blocking causing an erratic...

Re: The 'Off-Road' picture thread

Nice one John, that looked a tricky section; some stiff competition there, especially that yellow trialler with the fiddle brakes. Lurch sounded like it was running fine. I usually stay in 1st when driving sections, like yourself I found that 2nd can be a touch high at times. Hope you enjoyed it and...

Re: Newbie from N. Ireland

As for the resto, a full back-to-new condition sounds soo nice, but I would be happy to get it mechanically sound, MOT, tax and insurance and have a bit of fun.. I am lucky enough to have some ground, so I have places already in mind.. I bet you have some great spots over in Scotland.. Your approac...

Re: Newbie from N. Ireland

Hi Tinkerer, congrats on your purchase and welcome to the forum. Are you planning a full, back to 'as new' restoration or tidy it up, make it sound and use it approach?

Either way, looking forward to following you on your journey.

Cheers,

John

Re: Broken pre-heat pipe

Hi John - I haven't experienced the broken pipe that you have (you have my sympathies!), however it was something that I was concerned about some time ago. There's some weight in the carb/airfilter housing and the whole lot is supported cantilevered in mid-air just by the two manifold pipes and the ...

Re: Modified Pathfinder on eBay

An interesting conversation that highlights how well the Haf engine is suited to the vehicle and how effective (or lack of it) some engine changes are - because you cannot adjust the gearing to take advantages of a different engine. Garry Yes Garry, I agree that unless a replacement engine revs to ...
