Re: Carburetor in pieces!
I did replace them with Mog parts. Nothing I tried leaned out the mixture without turning the mixture screws all the way in. I have all stock jets, and I tried larger pilot air correction jets. No change. Replaced mog pump piston with a porsche one that had a better skirt, no luck. Lowered float lev...

Steering out of control
My haflinger isn't allowed on the road yet, so it's hard to test certain issues without access to a stretch of even, paved surface, but one thing I have noticed when I have snuck it onto a roadway is that at high speeds, going straight is impossible without constant correction on the steering wheel....

Re: Carburetor in pieces!
The events in this thread happened a few years ago, but perhaps you remember: How did you eventually solve the problem with the mixture screws having to be turned all the way in? And what ended up happening with the pressure valve and the tiny o-ring? I'm dealing with this exact same thing right now...

Re: Is it getting cold where you are?
It's still pretty warm and sunny here in my part of Canada, around 14C this week. But when I do get cold and the Haflinger is around, I put my hands on the valve covers: they're the right shape and temperature to warm my hands. It's best to turn the engine off when warming frozen, fumbly fing...

Re: Is the Forum Dying
I also read the forum nearly every day, but don't ask anything unless I'm feeling particularly stuck or particularly brazen. Having only one or two days a week to really work on it doesn't add up to much to talk about. Add to that the fact that I'm a newbie full of stupid questions and what you get ...

Re: For sale in Scotland
Interesting!
There are a few little things that I'm missing that look like they might be found in one of the boxes of odds and ends. Did you happen to get any of those, or just the engine parts?

Re: For sale in Scotland
Interesting modification of side boards and toolbox. And muffler.
I wish the seller had sold the parts items individually. There are a lot of goodies there!

Re: fuel in crankcase
So it turned out that I'm still getting gas into the oil. I can't figure it out at all. I pulled the fuel pump and pressurized it every day for a week and there's no leak past the diaphragm. I'm thinking that the fuel creeps up the side of the bowl and flows down the side. Every time I take off the ...

Re: Synthetic oil
I don't know about you guys, but I have trouble finding straight 90 gear oil in Canada that isn't for marine outboard motors, which isn't the same grade as auto gear oil (EP vs GL4/5). And specialty oils are all modern synthetic multigrades. The only straight 30 mineral based engine oil I've seen is...

Re: Synthetic oil
Thanks for the comments! I guess I'll put it into my hubs and front diff, since my regular car has neither hubs nor diff to safely put GL5 in. All the auto store people I talked to told me that GL5 supercedes GL4 and doesn't harm anything, but the internet says otherwise, so even if its a myth, I fe...

Re: Synthetic oil
I've got a similar question: From reading forums about VW's I learned that GL5 is harder on sychros than GL4, so it is not recommended as a substitute when GL4 is specified. I mistakenly bought a synthetic GL5 75w-90 for my '89 Golf and am now wondering If I can put it into the haflinger, if not int...

Re: webbing buckles
Having just been looking at photos of the Haflinger for sale on the Austrian ebay site, the black metal bit in your photo with the ball in the middle (center left in your photo) looks like its for the leather tab that shuts the side door window.

Re: Fuel tank lining clogging line and carby
I guess I just have to fork over the money and get someone to do it professionally. The Haflinger tanks I've seen have baffles too, so its hard to see what effect anything has on the hidden sides. I really don't like breathing the chemicals while I'm trying to rotate the tank to coat all the sides.....

Re: Fuel tank lining clogging line and carby
On this topic, does anyone have any advice for chemically stripping the tank of the old liner? I'm having trouble with it. Is Redi-strip a product or a service? And does the Por15 brand, Por-Strip work? What did you guys use? I tried a dichloromethane based stripper from the hardware store and it to...

Re: fuel in crankcase
Oh no! I couldn't think of any other solution. I tried new aluminum washers on the check valve and it leaked no matter what I tried. I mean, maybe the ones I got from HaflingerTechnik were the wrong size for the Unimog check valve I put in, they did seem a little larger than necessary. I guess I'm b...

Re: fuel in crankcase
So to finish the story, here's what I ended up doing: I polished the indent on the float where the valve sits, and sealed the pump valve carefully with gasket sealer, and it seems to have solved the problem. The fuel pump didn't appear to be the problem for me, even though it leaked enough to make p...

Re: Windshield glass replacement
Thanks for the technique and rope tip, Jim and John. I will attempt this as soon as I learn how to repair the rust holes in the windshield frame... Never done any kind of filling work before. For the sake of reference, John at HaflingerTechnik told me that the seal he sold me was for 6mm double lami...

Windshield glass replacement
Has anyone replaced the windshield panes by themselves, or is it something best left to an expert? I took out the old and cracked screens and they consisted of two panes sandwiched together. Is that how all Haflinger windshields should look like? I bought the new rubber seals from Haflinger Technik,...

Re: Fitting Oil pressure gauge
Here's my take on fitting an oil pressure gauge and sender: IMG_0176[1].JPG I used a 100 PSI VDO gauge and sender unit, and installed it by screwing an M10-1/8NPT adapter into the engine where the oil pressure sender goes, then a grease gun hose, the longest I could find (this was the most readily a...
