Re: Rear Differential noises

Your explanation has been really helpful - thanks so much! :) _________________ Julian B W Sussex, UK You're very welcome Julian. Re: Rear Differential noises

Hi Julian, I agree that many sections of the Repair Manual can be a tad difficult to follow. I think some things may have been lost in translation and sometimes pieces were omitted altogether during republications. If so, why, in 4-7, c) 1), do they talk about "installing r.h.s diff side cover ...

Re: Tyre markings

Hi Julian, I believe the "TU" stands for the location of the plant where the tyres were made. In this case the TU stands for Turin, IT where Semperit did have a manufacturing plant. I expect that LT & KT stand for other locations but you'll need to do some research to find where Semper...

Re: Rear Differential noises

Hi Julian, The easiest way to align the "knuckles is to first install the blocks and inner shaft then slide the side cover and outer half-axle sleeve over the shaft. The other method that works well is to degrease the blocks and stub ends then apply a drop of CA cement (Crazy Glue) to the stubs...

Hi Constantin, Thanks for uploading the magazine scan on your website. I never knew what magazine that image was published in. The copy I have was a very low resolution scan and the text is all but unreadable. Now if we can just get Nigel to discover the background story to his old Hafi we'll have a...

Hi Mike,
TechMOGogy (Dan) from The Portal Hub forum had some contact with the owner of the Quebec Haf. I haven't heard much more than that on it.
Cheers,
Steve

Re: eBay Haflinger Pathfinder

I firmly stand behind the "parts car" opinion on this one. I'm with you on this one. Having taken a careful look at each of the photos using the mouse-over zoom feature this truck shows some extremely severe rot in many critical areas. So how much is a questionable pair of diffs, gearbox ...

Hmmm - the Bug Eyed Haffies - they are ugly - something only a mother would love
...Says he with the FC101

We Bug Eye Haf owners feel the look adds to the "cute" factor.

Re: new Melbourne Australia Member

Hi Nigel, As Julian said, welcome to the group. I believe I have a photo of your old Haf in its younger days. I recognized it by the custom roll bars and front bush bars as well as the unique snap locations for attachment of the canvas hood (the custom canvas is installed in the picture I have). I'd...

Hi Dave,
Use the same 30W oil as your engine and fill to the bottom of the side drain hole.

Re: Brake Fluid

Hi Julian, I've never looked into why the Haf brake system is intolerant of synthetics but it looks like you've done the homework so all should be fine. You're correct on the difference between DOT 3 & DOT 4. Either should be fine but in our area the shops only seem to sell DOT 3 conventional or...

Re: Who Can Rebuild and ReJet a Zenith Carby In Sydney or Ne

Hi Garry,
Cylinder capacity is part of the equation but cam profile and cylinder head flow are bigger factors. That said, the stock Haf motor is quite forgiving in terms of carby configuration and I've seen a Series 1 engine that functioned on a Tillotson diaphram style snowmobile carb.

Haflinger in Quebec

There's a decent looking Haf for sale in Quebec. The ad says it's a 1969 but looking at the photos I'd have to say it's a 1968. I tried contacting the seller for more info but got no response yet. Note that the rear seats have been fastened to the platform as the seat doors are absent. Have a look a...

Oy that hurts the eyes! A very sad thing indeed. I hope the R9,000 asking price is equivalent to about $5.

Hi Julian,
Although a bit rare, green seat upholstery was available for Haflingers. It is more commonly found in Series 1 than later production years. I recommend that you keep yours as green.

Re: Rear seats

Hi John, Not all the Haf hinges are this easy. My pins are peened to a mushroom head on each end so would have needed to be ground off. I removed the hinge plate from the body instead by cutting the spot welds. Just as well that I did because the sheet metal underneath was heavily corroded. Ciao, St...

Re: Laying hands on my Haflinger

They told me that original red color is RAL 3000... RAL3000 (sometimes called Flame Red) is close but just a bit too deep in red tone. Most automotive paint systems do not work in the RAL or Pantone color palettes although they can often approximate them if provided with a color swatch. It's more a...

Plan is to return it to it's original red color.
Hi Bob,
That's a great looking Haf you found for yourself! It's great to hear that you plan to restore it to its original condition. For your reference the factory Red (Rot) color is VW/Audi paint code L36Q.

Re: Dynastart pulley / nut issue

Hi John, I used a nylon strap wrench to hold the pulley when rebuilding one of my governors. You could accomplish the same result using a short length of cotton rope whose diameter is about equal to the pulley width. Make a loose loop around the pulley then tighten the loop by twisting the rope with...
