Synchromesh

I find it increasingly difficult to select 1st & Reverse when stationary, possibly more so when the engine is warm/hot. It sometimes helps to select 3rd first, then 1st, as I was told that this can help "stop" the shaft to ease engaging gear. But not always. 1. Does this mean that sync...

Re: Hafling Treffen

For anyone with 30 minutes to spare, this is quite a well produced video of the recent Treffen in Sud Tirol. I think it represents the fabulous weekend well. We get blink & you’ll miss it cameos at times 01:39, 11:48 and 21:25. The commentary is in German, but I don’t think much is lost by not u...

Re: Mirrors

Did they ever? Certainly my UK spec 1972 LWB had round ones from he start. (The external "wing" mirrors that is).

Re: Electronic ignition options?

Worked out how to check resistance of the coil (3.6 ö), so that is fine. But I can't remove the points base without removing the distributor body from the engine as I can't get to the three screws on the outside, and I really don't want to muck up the timing. So will try again another day.

Re: Hafling Treffen

Sadly I didn't take many photos of individual Haflinger - I have so many from previous European trips! There was an EV conversion which was most impressive, and some incredible restorations, mainly Italian. I would say perhaps 30% were in excellent condition, 50% were used if not abused. Mainly mili...

Re: Electronic ignition options?

Thanks John, will let you know. FWIW I have a Pertronix Ignitor "MV-121 - Ignitor 12v 2 cyl Haflinger", https://expedition-imports.com/mv121 Cost me USD 140 from Expedition Imports in 2014. A scan of the instructions is attached below & also a photo of the box contents. Looking at the ...

Re: Electronic ignition options?

John - I have a Pertronix set that I bought in the US several years ago but never plucked up the courage to fit it. Must get over it and just fit it some time!

Hafling Treffen

Just returned from a fabulous few days in Sud Tirol in northern Italy. Originally planned for May 2020 which was postponed to May 2021, which was also postponed. There were 130-150 Haflingers there, from Austria, Switzerland, German, Italy, Portugal, Lesotho (/Netherlands) and 2 from the UK. Gloriou...

Re: Shuush The Little Haffies Are Sleeping

Well done John - great journeying! Surprised how few Hafs turned up in comparison to the Pinzgauers though.

I went for a couple of local journeys today giving mine a final shakedown prior to Sud Tirol. With fingers crossed all seems OK for now :D

Fuel Filters

I have just upgraded my fuel filtering system by adding a modern plastic filter in line with the original glass bowl filter. But what I can't quite get my head around is why both of them only seem to be 30-50% full of fuel (when idling). Assuming they don't "need" to be full, how does the ...

Exhaust sealant

Would you ordinarily use a white exhaust sealant (Gun Gum in the UK) when re-fitting the exhaust? I have just dropped mine to try to sort out a small leak (fairly sure it was on the LH side manifold) - I have x4 new gaskets, but not sure whether to also use the sealant. Also, the straight "in l...

Re: Disaster narrowly averted ...

Hi John, I'm not going to Dersingham - the Haf is not yet ready. Are you? I have now jacked up the LHS & removed the drums and pads etc; none of the 4 "pistons" budge at all, with some _slight_ corrosion showing on the front. I have tried to "rotate" them to free them up, usi...

Re: Disaster narrowly averted ...

Fuel lines within the engine bay have now been re-routed, and an auxiliary in-line fuel filter installed. Much better. Took it out for a quick jolly - great to see it back in its rightful setting again; all seems OK short of finding & fixing a leak in the exhaust & sorting out the brakes, wh...

Re: Disaster narrowly averted ...

Looking back through some old photos, I see that the entire fuel line was merely see-through plastic pipes when I bought it (2004). IIRC they had gone hard - not good at all. When I first removed the engine (2007) I upgraded the two sections within the engine bay to the braided pipes, and then when ...

Re: Disaster narrowly averted ...

IIRC my "new" fuel line is rubber from the tank to the fuel filter, then two lengths of braided within the engine bay. I have just received 5m of E10 approved rubber hose so will replace all three sections. With cable ties it is easy to keep the last two sections well away from hot metal p...

Re: Disaster narrowly averted ...

The fuel was 5 years old***, complete with a pinch of "lead replacement additive", so I think it was more likely a case of the rubber perishing due to being empty? Certainly the fuel filter bowl was empty. But I will now get some E10 approved hose - I might even go the whole hog and replac...
