Re: wire from coil to distributor

Razzle dazzle time, think of the braided part as a Chinese finger. Push both ends together, pull wire out, push a small Phillips screwdriver or dowel though both ends and re shape the braid. Push new wire through(14ga) then pull on both fittings while smoothing out the braided cover.

Re: Query on engine cover

The larger ducted cover houses a larger cooler and has a outlet flap to adjust/restrict cooling airflow.

No adverse effects. Tracks straight, stops fine. These are not front heavy like rally cars.

Re: Rear wheel brake cylinder applications

Simple formula for hydraulics, P(pressure) over A(area) = F(force). The larger set up allows for lower pedal effort resulting in improved holding on inclines when backing down. Been running this config for 6+ years. There are no adverse effects. Glad you got your cylinder repaired. Go have some fun ...

Re: Rear wheel brake cylinder applications

I always put large 22mm (front) wheel cylinders on all 4 wheels when they are available. Doing this gives superior brake performance and less pedal effort. It's just a good option. I also use a larger bore early VW master cylinder. It really helps when I tow my trailer(1100lbs loaded) to the dump wi...

Re: Fuel filter element - renew or replace

Just do it right, replace the element with correct part.
There are many little filters that can fit, why is this a problem in the uK?
Are there no auto part stores there for classic car parts?
I have used screen type in place of paper ones in a pinch.

Re: special tools

Ok, this is very simple..........get a short double box end wrench(I use 1/2 7/16" combo) and put 1 end over one of the mounting studs, secure with nut, and the other end bolt to flywheel with pressure a plate bolt ;)

Re: So has anyone re-woven the limit straps?

You can use nylon strap, I super glue them, clamp in vise till dry. Next poke 3 holes with heated nail or poker and then rivet them(use washer on back side). Quick and reliable repair. Going on 2 yrs use so far on repaired straps. The nylon webbing also acts as a cushion when extended(just like the ...

Re: engine oil leak

Replace the rubber diaphragm(rubber disc in gasket kit) in the top cap of oil filler pipe, they get stiff with age. Also make sure cap hose is attached to the air box.

Remove the belt, check for shaft play , feel for roughness while rotating fan by hand.
If bearings are bad change them, if you need brushes, use VW 6v starter brushes.

As long as the bearings are not blue from lack of oil, I would suspect the gear was not properly heat treated or missed in the batch.

Jack the front end up jiggle the wheels to see and feel(locate) the loose parts. Places to look, tie rod ends, pitman arm nut, centering arm bushings/pin. Also grab top and bottom of wheel to check kingpin bushings.

Re: Carburetor in pieces!

Just replace the accelerator pump and valve(part with disc) with updated Unimog or Pinzgauer pump valve. this combo works well. I build a lot of these Zenith carbs for Mogs/Haflingers and Pinzgauers, the old valves eventually leak fuel. If it runs with mixture screws in, either float level is too hi...

Re: Which electric fuel pumps are you folks using?

That pump was fitted by the Swiss, very common find on Swiss Milspec units. Looks like the pump cover gasket has shrunk. When they added the electric pump, they installed a block off plate that holds the pump lever secure away from cam. No need to crank to fill carb, faster starting, more reliable(i...

You can get a 1.5-2.5psi pump at Autozone/pep boys/or Oreilly's for around $50.
