Wanted Short Tilt/Bache/Hood call it what you will

Hi,

I am after an unserviceable short tilt that I can use as a pattern. I have a Land Rover Wolf 90 PVC hood that I will use to make a new one. Anyone out there with one?

Cheers

Doug

I have an old short tilt from a 1962 Haflinger that I think is complete, but tatty. I may have removed a few of the fittings for the new one that I had made, but can't be sure without digging it out. However ...

... this hood will probably only fit an early Haflinger with the very insubstantial "roof bar" (see second photo) - and not the more robust thick roll bar that was fitted on later models.

I would be happy to lend it to you, but would not want it to be unstitched or damaged etc. I am based in W Sussex. Even a short canvas is quite bulky & heavy, and wouldn't be cheap to ship!

NB: The "flap" on the top rear of the old hood in the first photo is probably an old addition, to cover the join between this short canvas and a separate rear canvas?

Do you know if any of the UK tilt makers have any experience with Hafs, I am thinking Exmoor trim and the likes?

Cheers

I don't think Exmoor do have any experience - certainly they didn't admit to any when I asked them a few years ago. In the end I used http://www.allwheeltrim.co.uk who did a one off job very well indeed (new roof & doors) ... but it was a jolly expensive exercise!

Hey Dougal - I had a local tarpaulin/sailboat canopy specialist make up my hood - I supplied the vehicle to them for a day, spoke to the seamstress with my very specific requirements and they turned it around.

Having the vehicle there enabled them to tailor it exactly - it might be worth seeing if there is somone local to you that could do the same.

Not particularly cheap (about £320 not including the doors), but I was happy with the work.

Cheers,

John

Julian,

Thanks for the info. I know All Wheel Trim (Kim?) they are good but can be expensive for unique work (once quoted me circa £500 for a PVC tilt for a Defender 90)

John, yours looks very tidy indeed and I guess by the M plate is a 1973 and therefore I assume the Cab would be very similar. I don't have the doors so I guess it would be somewhat cheaper. Did your supplier make a pattern that you know of that they could use again?

Cheers

No, unfortunately they did not make a pattern - they had the vehicle in their workshop and literally measured, cut and sewed it to fit around the frame - a bit of a 'one-off' I'm afraid. (Though there is no reason someone local to you could not do the same - look for tarpaulin manufacturers/sailing suppliers/tent repairs/bouncy castles, etc)

Cheers,

John

I am surrounded by castles, but not bouncy ones. I am sure there is someone in these parts that could help.

Thanks again

Yes, it was Kim at All Wheel Trim - very nice chap, extremely helpful, but as you say not cheap. I too left my Haf with them for a few days so that they could make it to fit. I am 99% sure that they did not keep a pattern.

I use All Wheel Trim for canvas work on my 101 - I have a full tilt, a truck cab and fume curtain made by them - all considered excellent work and good value - for us in Aust they are half the price of anything local.

I bet Kim did keep a pattern somewhere.

I suggest we start a cross reference on part names. The language barrier is killing me :-)

You are talking about the soft top, right? Fume curtain, is that the vertical canvas at the rear of the cab? Logical!

tnx,

Bob

Yes

As you would appreciate - in a forward control vehicle exhaust is sucked back into the cargo area and the cabin area - certainly happens in my Haffie and my 101. In my 101 the airflow in not in the front windows and out the back but from the rear and out the front windows - in rain the rain drops around the front of the vehicle go forward rather than to the rear in some areas.

With the full op on the 101, the fume curtain goes on the front hood bow so that there is a barrier between the cabin and the cargo area. It doesn't work all that well as the airflow over the vehicle lifts the hood a couple of inches so all the air in the back works its way into the can anyway - bit it does help warm the cabin warm in winter as the heater does not have to heat 12ftx6ftx5ft,

Good idea for a cross reference on names though.

Tilt is the correct name as used in the British Military for the Canvas or PVC cover/enclosure of an open vehicle. The French use Bache for a covering of just bout anything from wood piles to Trucks but I don't know if it is the correct term.

Fume curtains perform two roles, primarily for keeping vehicle fumes out of the cab but they are also very good for keeping cab heat in the cabin. If I am honest on my Ex military Defender 90 it is better at the latter than the former.

So does this mean that a "fume curtain" is an interior item in a full length Tilt and therefore in theory can be rolled up out of the way if you need to have access to the rear cargo area?

A short cab has a drop section behind the two front seats - would this also be called a "fume curtain"?

What about the "Bikini top"? Just a material roof over the two front seats, add a "fume curtain" and it becomes a short cab cover?

The fume curtain is not a permanent item - just held in place with straps so if the lower ones are released it can be rolled up - my Landie one certainly can.

The back of a short cab or 'truck cab' is not considered a fume curtain - it is just the back of the cab canvas. Fume curtains just compartmentalise the internal space of a larger box. So in Haflinger terms if you had the full canvas that goes from the top of the windscreen to the rear of the vehicle and if the compartmentalised this space by putting a roof to floor canvas curtain behind the front seats then that would be a fume curtain.

Don't ask what the same thing behind the second row of seats is called. Second row Fume Curtain - I don't know.
