Hi Gary , what are you hoping to do with the tyres, ie do you want them for everyday use or something else. I have 4 that have no holes in them, lots of tread but some slight cracking on the side walls . Have kept them to use if I was going into the paddocks and hills. IF you want them give me a Pm, their yours for the picking up. Danny

Hi Danny - thanks - I am looking for roadworthy examples as form time to time it will be used on road so they need to be safe. I normally use my 14" rims with good modern radials on but there are times for club displays and trips that it would be nice to use the correct wheels and tyres.

I am heading up to Newcastle about this time next month so a I will send you a PM a week or so before hand and may drop by if convenient.

Cheers

Garry

PS - dont suppose you have a spare 12" wheel??

Gary went out to see Michael, he had 5 wheels and tyres originals however did not want to part with them, so couldn't find a spare for you. Might head north and find one yet. Did get to go for a great ride in Micks Haffy, custom made his own wheels with large Bear Claw tyres crawled through the creek and Mud with ease. Danny

I had the pleasure of meeting Vampyr (Danny) last week and having a look at his Haffie.

Danny was able to find me a 12" wheel with a tyre on it and also some other tyres in various condition.

Danny - thanks for getting me the gear - I appreciate your efforts.

Also Danny has been putting in a lot of work on the Haffy he has - I will let him put up some pics ;)

His vehicle is just about completed and if it was me I would have tried to start it now but he is waiting a bit.

he has some spiffy looking alloys on it at the moment which I certainly didn't like at the start but by the time I left they certainly grew on me and I think they now look quite good.

Danny made the hood himself out of Aust Military Cam canvas and it certainly looks the goods - well made and fitting well - I wish mine was as good - you should be proud of your efforts.

So hopefully the Haffie will be operational soon :D

So we wait for the photos, Do they include the build photo's as well?

Would be nice to see someone making up a hood from scratch.

Thanks Gary, nice to get compliments. Really enjoyed the visit. Pleasure to talk to other owners. I have the original wheels but also Fiat POP 500 14 and 16 inch rims and mags. I'm hoping to find a aggressive looking retread for the 16 inch. Its not like I'm going to be doing high speeds. Happy to post some photo's soon. Once up and running will be looking at organising a haflinger trekken in the Clyde mountain ranges. Danny

Time to get my my 12" tyres and wheels sorted - I haven't had time as yet to take apart the wheel/tyre combo I got off Danny nut it looks a good rim. I have got stuck into the other four rims that I already had.

One is as new with no rust and could go tubeless with the one unused tyre I have.

The other 3 rims are a bit miserable. There is heavy rust pitting around the rims where the tyre bead would go so definitely no tubeless for these. In fact on a heavier faster vehicle I would say these rims are just about past it for everyday use though the welds are all good. As these wheels will only go on for show and to pass my annual rego authenticity test I will persevere.

These rims are now all cleaned up and painted in high build primer - they will need a sand and another coat before the silver top coat goes on - I would prefer another colour to silver but I do not see what other option would look OK. Body colour would look pretty ordinary.

As I mentioned in another thread, one of my tyres that I got with the vehicle is basically new and I noticed its diameter is about an inch greater than the other partly worn tyres, so what sort of difference in rolling diameter can the Haffie diffs handle. I could of course make the new tyres the spare and put half worn tyres on the road wheels but I would like to have the option is the diffs could handle a 1" difference in rolling diameter.

Cheers

Garry

All tyre rim combinations now stripped - Danny that wheel is good with little pitting. One rim is badly pitted so I will use it as the spare and put the virtually unused tyre on it - just concerned about the bigger rolling diameter of this tyre compared to the other half worn tyres.

I will put my other two old good half worn tyres on and two that I got off Danny - when I drive on them I will just be careful as they are all a bit hard and old but will be good enough for show.

I bought 5 new tubes but as expected they are modern thin Korean crap that are half the thickness of the old aussie made tubes that were in the tyres. Also even though all the tyres are genuine Semperit Universal Grips - the inside of the cases have two different designs - neither good for good tube like. One has a poker dot type pattern around the inside of the bead and should not cause the tubes too much trouble but the others have protruding ribs on the inside that would wear the tubes in no time at all. This was obvious on the tube that came out of the wheel and tyre that I got from Danny as the tube was thin in a couple of spots where the ribs were.

So wheels now painted silver and I will put the tyres back on and hopefully not pinch the tubes or get flats soon after.

General rule on tire diameter difference on 4x4 is 1/2" max.
This is actually one of the ASE test questions for Brake and front end certification.

Thanks Jim - thought it might be the case. I am a bit of a tight arse so putting the tyres back on the rims myself - the good old fashioned way with brawn and two tyres levers. Managed to get two tyres on so far without damaging anything though my body might disagree as it is feeling a bit sore. Getting too old for manual labour.

Only 3 tyres to go - yo ho.

I always hand mount mine, but always tubeless. Just step on far side of tire to keep it in the deepest part of the wheel, it will then fit around rim easier.

If I had new tyres and rims without pitting around the inside rim where the bead seals I would also go tubeless but all bits are of dubious quality so tubes are going in to be a little safer.

However these will not be used for everyday use - just shows etc. I like the 14" rims, nice modern tubeless radials and better and easier cruising speed - much safer all round.

Tubeless make emergency repair just so much easier.

Two more wheels to go :)

Problem with tubeless is when you have a slow leak and it's not obvious where it is from. Tubes you just pump up a little and stick them in a bucket of water and patch the hole when you have found it.
Tubeless have bead leaks, porous rim leaks, holes in the carcass leaks, valve leaks - still better for everyday use though!

I've got to put a tube in one of my Fiat rims as it looks like the bead doesn't seal even after cleaning it all up and painting it and applying bead sealer! Must be porous paint!

it is easy to check tubeless for leaks - I squirter bottle fillled with dishwasher liquid and water and start spraying the wheel tyre combo -air leaks show up as bubbles - works really well.

Five tyres and tubes now done - what a pain.

Difference in height of 12" vs 14" tyres - while it doesn't look it the tyres are directly up against each other.
Image

So I have put the 12" wheels back on with their dodgy tyres. The first thing I noticed is that the grip on the grass is worse than the M&S 14" radials but that is maybe to be expected as the 12" tyres are old and very hard.

I drove about 10 km around the area both onroad and offroad - the ride is a lot harsher and the car wandered a lot but again not unexpected. My speedo under read by about 3kph on the 14" tyres and now over reads by about the same amount on the 12". Crusing speed at 4000rpm has dropped from about 71kph to 66kph as would be expected. Interestingly pulling ability and the feel of the power did not seem to change - I would have expected that with the 12" tyres the haffy would feel a little more zippy but in that aspect it feels the same as the 14".

I am Ok with the tyres I have on it except for this one that has some major cracks but it did seem to hold up OK - other than this test I do not intend to drive around on these wheels and tyres so should be OK for my intended use.
Image

So while these suit my needs for the moment, if I had decent tyres I would use them for offroad use. So I am still on the look for good/new Semperit Universal grips. It is a shame that no seems to be remaking them.

How about buying some Mayola's and having them grooved with a similar pattern as the Semprit's? Probably the nearest you are going to get until someone starts a short re-runs of Semprit's!
