Hour Meter Wanted

Post by AustHaflinger »

The previous owner of my Haflinger disposed of the oem round analogue hour meter and installed a digital Tiny Tach combined hour meter and tacho.

If anyone in Australia has an extra OEM hour meter lying around that they would be happy to part with for a really cheap price (and I mean cheap) then please send me a PM.

Thanks

Gary, Does your Haf spend a long time just idling? The only reason I can see for having an hour meter is if you have the PTO and some piece of equipment that runs when the Haf is stationary and providing power to it. Then it makes sense to know how many hours the engine has been running in order schedule engine maintenance.

Still if there was one there originally - Are you sure the previous owner didn't just make a hole for the combined unit?

Thanks John - simply it did have one and there is a big hole in the dash where is was and if possible I would to put an OEM item in there. They are as cheap as chips on ebay - $14 AUD but I would like to get one that was in there originally.

Cheers

Hey Gary,
The hour meter in my dash sits in its own little panel and is not part of the main dashboard panel. It also sits to the left of the main panel of switches and gauges. So I suppose if you are concerned about a big empty hole then you could remove that little panel and it would just be a gap between the dash and the open glove box.
Also the hour meter is not particular to Haffies, it is the same as I have seen in all sorts of equipment, mining, marine and industry so it should be easy enough to get one either new or pre loved.
I would enclose a photo of how my dash looks but I can't remember how to do it.
Regards Rick.

Got my hour meter - to wire it in is it just earth the unit and apply switched 12v to the terminal (though there is an inscription that says both terminals need to be connected to 12v but I assume one is for instrument illumination.

How do you know it is working - other than looking at it for a while.

Thanks

Hey Gary,
My hourmeter has an earth lead from the bracket to the body and a positive lead to a power source, and the light has a lead to a power source and it just earths out where it pushes into the body of the gauge.
I ran mine for a couple of hours just hooked up to a battery and could then see if the complete thing was ticking over and to see how accurate it was.
Regards Rick.

Ok - took the plastic cover off the back - removing the lead seal on the unit.

There is no light in the unit.

It does not earth through the gauge chassis or the mount.

With the rear plastic cover off there are +ive and -ive marks - a red wire off the +ive mark contact and a orange (not black) wire off the -ive contact.

Powered up as above you can see the little movement sweep marker through the little window from the front so is all working.

Just got to put it in :)
