Lurch is asleep until the weekend, then he gets to drive a long way on ordinary roads, then a ways on BOATS (Byways open to all traffic) - commonly known as "green lanes" before driving home again for Saturday evening.

Sunday he gets to drive so more ordinary roads to a car show where he (I hope) gets to drive round their 4x4 course - Hope he doesn't embarrass us in front of the more normal 4x4 crowd (Landrovers, Rangerovers and other 4x4 contenders.

At least he is getting a run - all the others are still sleeping so is mine. I might take him for a short run tomorrow but I have a 4wd show and tell the following week.

I have ordered some hi speed hub gears from Austria but they have not arrived after nearly 4 weeks so I am a bit concerned that they have got lost in the mail so may turn out to be an expensive exercise for me if they have been lost. I had hoped they would have been in by now.

Gary,

Did you get a tracking number for the parcel? Anything that expensive should have traveled with tracking as like you say, if they get lost then you are down a fair amount of money not to mention not having the frustration of having to order all over again.

When you put it down on "paper" - High speed hub gears, it brings to mind that you are going to go Drag racing with the Haf! :D

Well a sent a message to the seller and he advised that the parcel was delivered to my address on 2 Sept and signed for by a T Saini even though it had my name on it - no on here by that address - nor in my street.

Also, instead of addressing the package as I had indicated in the order (and on the paypal payment) they rearranged the format so it country first, postcode second, town third and State (county) last but a bright postie could work it out. The main issue is that my house number is 21 and they addressed it as 212 and the max number in my street is 23. They got the street right.

I have asked for the tracking information but our postal system will not deal with the receiver only the sender in Austria. Nevertheless I will check with the post on Monday.

I did pay for the item via Paypal so I have that avenue to maybe get my money back but I will exhaust other options first.

The street was correct so I might do a door knock tomorrow and see if anything comes up.

I cannot really afford to loose nearly €700 at the moment. :(

Cheers

Garry

I always try to follow the pattern of the address is I have to send something anywhere, the people who live there know better than me what their address is!

Must be tied to their invoice / stock database system if they re-arrange an address so completely. I wonder if the postie took it back when he discovered the house number did not exist! Then signed for it himself so he wouldn't get in trouble for not delivering it?

Yes - my house number is 21 where the package was addressed to 212 and the highest street number is 23 in my street. The package was signed for by a T. Raini which I understand is an Indian name. just so happens that my local post courier driver is Indian - we have the same guy all in the time - indeed he delivered a package to me the same day this package was supposedly delivered.

Hopefully he returned it to the post office as being undelivered so I will check on Monday. I am going to go door knocking in my street in a little while just in case it was just dumped at say No 2 and signed for.

I am just annoyed at the seller for not following the address given and also provided by Paypal.

Garry,

I am wondering if this is from Robert Porchski.

I have had nothing but trouble from his business and only to here in France. He refuses to use a correct address regardless of who supplies it to him. To add insult to injury his courier fees are quite ridiculous. Because of his policy of incorrect addressing, I have to continue to meet his couriers in neighbouring towns as they refuse to try and find an incomplete address. This is a problem unique to his deliveries.

Further to that, I have had a couple of situations where I have done no more than ask him a question through ebay which he takes as being an order, resulting in the courier company nightmare starting again.

I wish he could be avoided.

Apologies if I am the only one suffering from this problem from our Austrian friend. Maybe he has an issue with Uk/Australians living in France!

Enough of my rants

Yes was Robert.

I have tracked the parcel and it is now on a ship going back to him as sea mail - marked address unknown - Return to Sender. There is checking in the post system to determine the correct address - if not correct is it automatically sent back to sender via surface/sea mail.

I have asked Robert to either send a new package or do a Paypal refund and am waiting for a response.

Cheers

Hi Garry,

I thought it would be. Perhaps our club could have a polite word with him about accurately using the addresses that are provided to him. Given his postal charges I hope he would agree to this.

Cheers

They have advised me they have send me another package which I have confirmed via the tracking number got despatched yesterday.

So despite the addressing issues it is good to see that they have done the right thing. They have confirmed it is being sent to the correct address.

As this is not an isolated incident I think they just need to be more careful with addresses but at least they did not have to be forced to do the right thing.

I am glad to hear that they have responded positively to your request Gary. They could easily have waited until they received the one returning home (via sea mail) before sending you a replacement set of hub gears.

Just remember that when you fit them, that Haflingers are not really designed to go 60 MPH!!! It might decide to take a nap at the first corner!

I am not wanting to go faster but do want to reduce engine revs at cruise speed so I would like a max cruise of 60 - 70kph with the engine below 4000rpm. The new engine is even stronger than the old one and will easily pull well over redline in 5th gear. I will be putting a rev limiter on it but one that can be switched off when I street race Subaru WRXs.

I am sure you would beat a Subaru VRX in a "slow" race!!! Are you going to change the gearing plate on the dash when you have fitted your high speed hub gears? Or leave it as a "wolf in sheep's clothing"?

Maybe I should get a big bore engine built. I have the remains of enough engine bits to be able to do it - cost is likely to be the sticking point at the moment though.

The hub gears arrived today - once advised of the original issue concerning the mis-addressing I cannot fault the customer service provided by Matthias at Robert Prokschi. With no prompting they did the right thing and all has ended well.

All I have to do is put them in.

Gary,

be aware that changing the hub gears is not simply taking one set of gearwheels out and putting an new one in. The hub shafts, where the large gearwheels sit on, have tapered bearings which need to be pre-tensioned correctly. This is done with a spacer ring that sits on the back side of the housing, under the square lid which is attached with four bolts.

Putting new gearwheels in means that you might need to fit new spacer rings to compensate differences in the dimensions of the gearwheels. Otherwise the tension might be too high or too low (i.e. allowing for play in the housing), which will certainly lead to an increase in wear. The pre-tensioning procedure is described in the repair manual.

Kind regards,
Constantin

Thanks Constantin - yes I had heard that but I haven't looked into it as yet. Starting the job this week so the first bit will be reading the w/s manual.

Cheers.

A few quick tips, do them 1 at a time and measure gear height, replace with closest match from new set.
Use Permatex Aviation sealant on backing plate side of gasket only. And only use blue locktite if any.
Stop sheets for retainers may be re used 1 time in most cases.
