Hafi trailer

Post by Techmogogy »

Would a 5x6ft (wxl) work? Sides are 12" high.
A friend has a great little trailer but not sure a Hafi will fit lengthwise.
Mine is in a few pieces :) so I can't put a tape measure to it.
Thx

I think you will find it is too short. My trailer is 8' x5' and it fits fine.

With the sides I could probably reduce the length to 7' long but that would be about it.

Garry, are you able to get a within-tolerance tow ball nose weight with such a short trailer?

My tow bar has a max tow ball nose weight of 100kg, and IIRC the book suggests that being as close to that figure as possible makes for best control.

I am not sure that I follow.

The tow ball nose rating of my RRS is 350kg, so the trailer is very much within that but I haven't actually measured it - my guess is that the tow ball weight is around 100kg. With the Haff onboard total weight is about 1000kg so using the 1:10 rule a tow ball weight of about 100kg is about right. The trailer has override brakes and its coupling is the same as used on may caravans so has a rating of 2500kg.

The total package tows really well - very stable.

Cheers

Hi Guys, I run mine in a 8x5 foot trailer also, tows great, only problem I had was my trailer has 500mm sides, front and back so I trimmed down the front so I could run the haflingers front wheels right up to the front wall.

Gidday,
Seeing the recent photos of a haffie on a trailer, I must admit that the excuse I used to get a Haffie was to have a vehicle that we can tow, on a trailer, behind the motor home, we have recently bought. Thought about a smart car, bikes, push bikes etc etc but the Haffie won out. I will build or buy a 8X5 trailer with 4 wheels which I think will make it easier to man handle the loaded trailer. The size mentioned is right but the height of the sides may have to be considered as some one has already mentioned. On a trailer much smaller than this I think it is a bit like carrying a pig on a tortoise. As long as the pig stands still and there are no corners you are right but what happens when things change?
Regards Rick.

Here is my Haffie about 12 years ago when the then owner used it for gold prospecting in the gold fields north of Kalgoolie in Western Australia.

I would reconsider the use of a 4 wheel trailer - 4 wheels are not needed because of the light weight and are harder to manhandle. Put a heavy duty jocky wheel on and some brakes on the axle with a handbrake up near the tow couple so you can hand brake it if needed.

A couple of years ago I bought a small 2 wheel trailer that the previous owner used to tow his Smart car behind a motorhome. The "working bed" is 8' x 5'5" (2.4m x 1.6m). A SWB fits on fine, and I _think_ a LWB will fit too, albeit with a slight overhang. I have no issues whatsoever with it only having two wheels, and it is a delight to tow compared to the much bigger / heavier trailer that I also have.
