New member with lots of questions !

Post by HerrFlinger »

Hello all out there -

A quick hello and introduction from Monyash, Derbyshire, UK.
Well, three years of Haflinger (ish) ownership and I've only just found this forum. I was beginning to think Haflinger owners were a solitary lot . . .
Like many Haf owners, I didn't really mean to, but stumbled on this on ebay . . .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WR4p6qjY7Dc

Bought as non runner, after a short amount of carb tinkering by an octogenarian friend who fixed stuff in the North African desert during WW11, our early MK1 4 speed SWB buggy fired into life. The video above was it's first proper run. We set off up the yard with my lad on the back where there was a large heap of stone. I said to him " we can get up that - but don't tell your mother as there are no brakes". Two minutes later, we were on top of the heap laughing loudly. I looked down the yard to see my wife stood there . . . .

Anyway, since then, and after a fair amount of research I decided to restore it. As you can see there wasn't a lot to it. I've acquired a platform via ebay Austria (phew !) and a polycab via Dale at Haflinger Technik.

At present, the buggy is in bits. I've scrapped the "home brew" body and all the rear end has been shot blasted and powder coated. The plan is to work forwards - it makes sense to me.

Anyway, looking forward to hearing from others more knowledgeable than me !

Paul,
Welcome on board. Now, don't feel like you have missed years of posts on this forum as this site did not come into existence until late 2012. There are others as well. For example,

http://pinzforum.kiruna.de/index.php?si ... 8be87479aa

http://haflingereins.com/forums/

http://real4x4forums.com/PinzgauerBBS/v ... c10a577b83

and there are others as well. Have you had an opportunity to look through Contantin Kiesling's sites?

http://main.haflinger-4wd.com/

and

http://tdc.haflinger-4wd.com/

Did you purchase an entire polycab truck or just the cab from Dale?

Bring on the questions as they come up. You are very fortunate as there are quite a few Haflinger owners in the UK. You are also a mere four hour drive to Dale in Scotland. In my mind, that is a true luxury.

Take care.

Hi Jim, and thanks for the info - this kind of forum is perfect if you own something that is a little "left of field" !

I haven't checked all those listed yet, but have looked at Contantin's - superb information resource.

Yes, you're right about access to Dale's outfit. We've incorporated two visits whilst on family trips to Edinburgh - he's got some really interesting kit there . . .

I bought just a polycab cab from Dale. Apparently it's an early one and was in very good condition complete with all glass, badges and interior dash and wiring. As I was storing it outside, the first thing we did was strip it out for preservation. I was lucky as a local haulage co. pass by Dale's on their routes, so picked it up on a pallet. Likewise, another local haulage co. have a depot in Linz which is where I obtained the platform from in Austria !
I guess that's pretty lucky !

I'll post some pics of work I've carried so far, soon -

Cheers

Julian -

I take no credit for the vehicle on the video - I only got it running !
I take my hat off to the previous owner, though. In spite of looking like a Mad Max extra, it was well executed. He apparently used it for marking out motocross enduro courses - hence the tiny 12" Dunlop agri tyres. Latterly it was used to tow a grass mower. Grass cuttings combined with several oil leaks and an air coiled engine did not make for happy running. You could hardly make out the cooling fins !
I've got through lots of Gunk . . .

Paul,

I suppose you already know that there is The Haflinger and Pinzgauer Club Uk. The web site is unfortunately down at the moment, but there is always email.
