Hi , I am Nigel, live in Melbourne
New member joining. I am amazed to find this site. I've googled haflingers a lot, and only just found it. Fabulous!! Hello!

I used to have a 71 haf somewhere around the mid 80s. I still have the ad from "The Age", advertised for $1950, had a canvas cover and a set of big mud tyres and may have had a RWC.
As the photo shows it was beige, had a full roll cage. The owner, Frankston I think, had used it for shooting around Mansfield.
I had it for about 5 years and sold it for around $4500. I built a body for it out of caravan cladding, made doors etc, and at one stage I commuted to work in it every day for about 6 months. I did get some 13" Alfa rims fro it, but remember it getting wobbly at speed -tyre flex!
Didn't really do any off-roading apart from a day with LROC in Dandenong. Quite fun driving around the LR & RRs in the mud.

I've been lurking on ebay/car sales for a few years looking to buy another haflinger, so we will see what happens one day!
Would love a LWB, a 5 speed before a 4 speed, but perhaps any car is better than none!

I still have my workshop manuals etc from the old car, must've known I'd want another car one day.

Hi Nigel - welcome to the forum! That's a nice looking Haf you had there - with an unusual roll cage arrangement!

As for LWB/ SWB and 5 or 4 speed drive decision, I would be more than happy with either length, but do agree that 5 speed makes for a much more flexible - and usable - Haflinger. Good luck with the search!

Hi Nigel,
As Julian said, welcome to the group. I believe I have a photo of your old Haf in its younger days. I recognized it by the custom roll bars and front bush bars as well as the unique snap locations for attachment of the canvas hood (the custom canvas is installed in the picture I have). I'd post the picture in the forum but it also includes a very unclad young lady posing in the driver's side doorway. The image was sent to me by a friend years ago and is a scan from an Aussie gentleman's magazine I think.

Hello Nigel and welcome to the forum. Yes I think many of us have seen your Haflinger with the young lady. I hope you find another soon- there is a 63 Haflinger on ebay at the moment from Frankston.

Yes a Constantin mentioned the Australian Haflinger club website is down, but not for much longer I expect. Some final corrections and it will be ready to go live soon, but I've been saying that for a while now.

Hi & thanks for the messages.

I am contemplating the frankston car. I asked some questions to be seller but no replies.

RWC means Road worthy certificate, like a MOT, warrant of fitness (NZ).

Not fussed with restoring, I want a beach car. I have a fair bit if equipment, about to start a full resto on an Alfasud. I did imagine a stainless steel platform. Wouldn't have to worry about salt!

I'll let you know how I go with the auction.

Welcome to the forum. Good to have another Victorian on the forum. Finding one good working Haffy for sale is getting harder and harder. All the ones I see for sale need a lot of work. Just keep on looking.

Its interesting that the rear canopy frame on you old Haflinger is the same as on the Haflinger up for sale on ebay at the moment (see photo). Do you know if this was a one-off custom frame, or if these were made to order by some after-market fabricator?

Thanks for uploading the magazine scan on your website. I never knew what magazine that image was published in. The copy I have was a very low resolution scan and the text is all but unreadable. Now if we can just get Nigel to discover the background story to his old Hafi we'll have a really good chapter in Haflinger history

The frame on this one in the picture of the blue one on ebay is the same as the one I have on mine. It has pins on the ends and goes into the holes in the corners of the uprights and in the middle. The pic on the top looks aftermarket.
