Tyres and Rims

Hi Folks,

I'm not a tyre wizard and I need a little advice. I've found a local guy who is selling some old 14 inch Fiat rims with new m/t tyres. The tyres are 175/70R13. I have noticed in other threads that folks have run these same tyres. Do they rub? How is the performance/max speed affected?

Thanks in advance.

I assume a typo but 13" tyres will not fit 14" rims.

I have 14" fiat rims with 185/80 R14 Hankook MS tyres and all goes good - acceleration is slight reduced - real top speed is unchanged but revs are lowered so a little easier on the engine.

Welcome to the forum - I assume you are from a proper english speaking country as you spelt tyres correctly not tires like those from the New World. So please go into your profile in the User Panel (top right of the page) and put in your Town/City and Country - this way there may be people who are local to you who can help.

Cheers

Garry

Yes, there's a typo. They are 13" rims. Would I be better off with 14" rims?

I'm from Canada. New world guy who prefers old world spelling.

Cheers,
Chris

No real advantage to going to 14 inch rims over 13 inch rims. The real world only looks at ground clearance. USe the tyre bible to check the comparison between the various tyres you are looking at. https://www.carbibles.com/tire-size-calculator/

The standard size for most Haflingers is 165/80/12.

So just for easy of purchase the Fiat 13 inch rims are a good choice as you are likely to find a range of tyre types you can buy locally and not have to order from Europe and then have the hassle of customs etc.

As John has mentioned the size of wheel is not all that important, it is the overall rolling diameter of the tyre on the rim. Overall you do not want to go over about 25".

Whether to go 13" or 14" depends on tyre availability in you location - onroad tyres are no issue but offroad is more problematic. Where I am you can only buy 13" offroad tyres as retreads - not such an issue for a light Haflinger. Here you can buy new Maxxis Mud Terrain tyres in 14" so would be preferred. No ATV tyres are DOT rated here. In North America some ATV tyres are DOT rated but will only be in 12" or 14" tyres but both have a diameter of about 25".

So if you have 13" rims see what tyres you can get but there should be no issues fitting them.
