Engine tin ware

Post by mechanical horse »

Hey all, I am currently putting my engine back together and am unsure if the tin ware that is full width across the rear of the engine fits between the engine and the spacer ring or between the spacer ring and the bell housing. I have currently got it between the ring and the engine but I need to make sure before fitting the exhaust system. Have been nearly all day test fitting everything, drilling out broken studs and rethreading stripped holes and it all fits spot on now, but I am uncertain about this bit of tin. Setting up the manifolds in a jig certainly helped in keeping it all in line while I welded up the holes, and then cleaning every thread with a tap or die nut makes the job easier as well.

On mine the tin sits between the bell housing and the spacer ring. (Sounds logical too, as not all Hafs have the spacer ring)

Picture is correct!
Spacer is used on engines with 180mm clutch.
Of note regarding exhaust fitting; muffler inlet is longer on models with spacer.(series 2)

Hey Julian, In regards to the fitting of my tin ware, you suggested that the tin ware fits between the spacer ring and the bell housing. When I attempt to assemble mine in that order I can't get the large piece of tin to screw up to the shrouds that wrap around the back of the cylinders, as it is being held away from making contact by the spacer ring. However if I assemble things by putting the big bit of tin in place and then screwing the small square plates on through the big bit of tin and into the 4 screw holes that surround the square openings in the shrouds that wrap around the back of the cylinders, then it all fits properly. I then slip on the spacer ring and my engine looks exactly the same as yours in the photo The result of this is that the tin fits between the engine and the ring and not between the ring and the bell housing, like you suggest. A couple of questions. Would there be different ways of fitting the tin on different models? and am I right in clamping the big bit of tin in place between the small square plate and the square holes in the shrouds that wrap the rear of the cylinders? If this is wrong then what holds the big bit of tin in its place? It would be held around the centre where the fly wheel is , but the ends would be floating around with no support. Sorry about the sentences that contain 100 words but I am having a bit of trouble explaining my problem. I have taken dozens of photos of what I have done so far, but none of them show the ring either on the rear of the engine or hanging off the bell housing. As normal I was standing either a foot to far left or right when I took the photos. This problem is dragging out but I am not concerned as I haven't needed to hurry about anything since 2002. Anyway it is freezing today, plenty of rain and the temp is down to 20C and we will probably have snow soon.

I may have misread the posts, but my take on this is that the tin goes between the engine bell housing (not gearbox) and the spacer ring - terminology?. Posted another photo below shows placing which looks like the cover is outside the spacer ring (or it simply may not be fitted), not sure if this helps or further confuses things?

I fear that what I said was misleading    - but my photo was correct.

The tin goes between engine and spacer, not gearbox and spacer. Sorry!

Hey Julian, Jim, Kerry and Stuart, Thanks for your input in regards my not knowing which way is which for the tin ware. I think the problem is solved and I will continue with finishing off the engine tomorrow. I have found a number of photos of the rear of Haffie engines and there seems to be a variety of shapes and sizes in the tin ware department. I suppose them being made/assembled at places all around the world would lead to that sort of result. Thanks again.

It could also be down to the "MK" of the vehicle... i.e. early engines with the small oil cooler have a different top tinware from ones with the later oil cooler. Might be the same for the lower tinware?
