Range out of a Tank

Post by AustHaflinger »

What range are people getting out of a tank of fuel? By that I do not mean from fill to empty but say from fill to when you need to fill but still have enough fuel to get to the garage - say when the "reserve" light comes on? Also is your range, oddometer range or GPS range.

Currently I am getting about 200km oddometer range before the reserve light comes on permanently but it starts flickering from about 180km. The 200km oddometer range equates to about 218km GPS range so I would probably get 250/260km from full to the engine stops running.

I generally fill Lurch's tank when the gauge shows about 1/4 full, but without getting details from the App I use to monitor fuel consumption, I would say I get varying mpg from about 19/20 around town to 29 /30 on a long journey. I post some more details later.

Thanks interesting - I would have though it would have been similar in both scenarios. Mine does not seem to change much - about 23/24mpg depending on terrain - hills knock it around a bit.

Gary,

Screen shot of the data relating to Lurch’s fuel consumption. The 43 mpg seems to be an aberration - I probably missed recording a fill up. The very low figures are due to Trials where you are off-road and quite a lot of idling.

Discounting the 43mpg and the 19mpg trips, you seem to be very similar to my consumption - I have not done any long trips with the longest single trip only being 90km so I might try to head up the highway for a couple of hundred km and back just to see if I can get your 30mpg.

The handbook says that we should be getting 30+mpg but I think that is a bit unrealistic given the technology in the vehicle. Though I find it amazing that my 700kg, 750cc Haflinger is giving 23/4mpg at an average speed of 50kph where my 2500kg, land rover gives 35mpg at around 110kph with the aircon on.
