Haflinger engine rebuild - issue with valves pushrods

Post by BEEBEC »

Happy new year 2021 to you and all your family; stay safe and healthy !

I have almost finished to rebuild our engine but when making a dry turn, we discovered the day before Christmas that one of the valve was touching one of the piston
The same mark is visible on the old piston, meaning that something was wrong before the rebuild.
After some investigation we think the root cause comes from a push rod which is not at the right length :
one of the push rod is 260,4 mm, the other one 261,5 mm

We did not find in the literature what is the factory length of these rods ?

Thanks for your help

Welcome,

It's a bit late at the moment to go hunting in the workshop - will try and get you details tomorrow or over the weekend.

Please can you fill in your profile with a few location details as this is a world wide forum, so have people all over the world registered.

Push rods are not the same length - fronts are a different length to the rears - not sure which is which.

If you have a look at the last three videos on Youtube from Hubnut who is working on a Haflinger engine in a Invacar where he gets confused a bit which one goes where but sorts it out. (Maybe). See min 7.52 on the second video where Mr Hubnut tries to sort out where the push rods go - then look at 9.22 where he is not so sure. From 12.30 he decides all is good - so short push rods are on the inlet (pulley side) and long pushrods are exhaust (flywheel end).

PS - I had a look at both the workshop manual and the parts manual and cannot see anything that identifies the different lengths - the parts manual identifies inlet push rods and exhaust push rods as different parts but no further information as to length.

Thank you Garry for your quick reply. I arrived at the same conclusion than you after looking at everywhere in the documentation, no length indicated.
I am aware that the exhaust and inlet pushrods have different length due to their different position/camshaft. But in my case the issue is that the two exhaust pushrods do not have the same length ! ???
So I intend to buy or manufacture new ones but need the specification ;)

Hi, Checked on lengths of the pushrods: Lengths 260 and 234
Shorter ones are inlet. Longer ones are exhaust.
