What type of grease should I use in my 400g grease gun for general purpose use? Things like steering pivot point, control rod pivot points, and general grease points on agricultural implements. I _really_ would like to use just one type. Should I use LM2 or EP2 or something else? Does it matter whether I use a lithium based or molybdenum based grease?

What do you use else where? Just use what ever you have, it will make no difference in the temperatures we have, if we had real extremes then you could worry over the sort of grease!

The real point is that you get "some" grease into the joint and not just out of the nearest hole.....

I shall being doing this job on Lurch today as part of the build up to the MOT and then Dutch Treffen!

I have been using Comma Multipurpose grease, but have almost run out, hence the need to re-stock (and the question). Perhaps I am over thinking this, and should just buy any old multipurpose stuff

My 1970 LWB passed the MOT yesterday (whoopee!), and will dig out my 1962 SWB over the next couple of weeks and then decide which to take to the Netherlands. Good luck with yours!

General purpose grease that has a low melting point is good for most non rotating uses - and is generally suitable for wheel bearings but I would use specific wheel bearing grease for those.

Cvs need high temp grease specific for the purpose and as these are high temp they may not be suitable for low temp applications though I have not really found an issue in other applications - on other vehicles this may not be suitable in driveshaft splines or UJs (ok at high speeds but not so much at low speeds).

So any General Purpose grease for all applications except CVs and maybe wheel bearings.

Over here(U.S.) I use waterproof boat trailer grease or Red Crown synthetic. These types have good overall heat ratings and they dispel water.

What kind of grease do you guys recommend for the CV's? I'm particularly concerned about those because of the effort it takes to regrease them, compared to regular grease fittings that can be easily pumped up.
Is there any particular brand or formulation that's best and longest lasting?

CV grease is quite specific - so if you just google CV grease your local suppliers and brands should come up. Generally CV grease will contain molybdenum disulfide. However there may be something specific to your cold climate which will be available locally.

A previous owner tapped two small holes into my CVs that have small bolts in them that can be removed and a grease nipple inserted to refill the CVs - however if the seals are OK the grease should not need servicing.

According to the Operators Manual, 18

Starting at the front:-

Steering idler pin
Top and bottom swivel pins (King Pins) both sides
Four wheel drive pivot point
Rear diff lock pivot point
Speedometer drive
Clutch cable
Middle of torque tube, rear diff lock pivot point
Hand brake cable, both sides
Clutch housing, rear diff lock pivot point
Clutch Cable pivot point on gearbox casing
Choke Cable(?) mine doesn't have a grease nipple point.
If you have the PTO - then there are 3 associated with that.

That would make 18!


I make that 13 - I know later Haf’s had fewer grease point s than earlier one according to the manual, but as I only have a later Haf. I can only detail the ones I know!

This is from an undated Operators Handbook - but the Haflinger has a Zenith carb, later fuel tank and faster hubs so presumably a Series II.

You need to download the handbook, specs sheet, workshop manual etc from the documents section as most of this routine servicing information is contained in those documents.
