Reverse Light Switch

Post by AustHaflinger »

My Haflinger being a 73 build should have a reverse light mechanism and indeed my vehicle does have the actual light and the wiring into the engine bay but has never worked.

When working on my car I dismantled the gear linkage tower on the side of the gearbox where the switch is supposed but nothing is there - indeed it looks as if the housing has been replaced as the hole is not in the mounting pad on the side.

You can see the pad on the side - I think that is where the switch is supposed to go.

So if I buy the correct switch (if I can) and drill a hole with the correct thread and wire it up should this enable the reverse light? Unfortunately my parts list predates my model so does not have the reverse switch listed.

Thanks

The latest Parts Book I have is dated 5-1969, and on page 2-05/0 that flat pad is not shown (nor any associated electrical bits). Sorry I can't help!

I dont know the date of my parts book but I guess it is about the same as yours - it also does not show the switch mechanism for the reversing light.

I went through my Haflinger pics and found these two.

Shows the switch

This is with the top off - unfortunately whoever took the pic cut the top off a bit but I think that little rod at the top of the pic is the switch extension.

Yes you can drill and tap. Don’t install the switch until you put transmission in reverse. You may have to shim with extra washer. Uses same switch as Pinzgauer locker.
Or you can use a manual switch. The circuit is already there.

Hi Dave - I have no idea as there are no markings so "haflinger". This is not an aftermarket fitting or add on and is designed to fit the cutout in the rear door. Though it may have been added from local supplies during assembly in Melbourne - if so most likely a Hella.

It’s Hella, same socket and lens as VW Bus.
Haflinger trim ring has upper lip. VW is smooth , no lip.
