Distributor Map

Post by AustHaflinger »

Does anyone know what the distributor map is for a 73 Haflinger.

By map - I am after advance in degrees versus engine RPM up to to top end of the governor limit of 5200rpm.

I have an after market electronic ignition system with various maps programmed into it and am trying to pick the one that best fits the engine requirements.

Thanks

Gary,

I wonder if one of the road test type magazines ever printed one of those. I have to say I have never seen one for the Haflinger.

You could try getting hold of a meter that shows Dwell angle and make your own map if you can use your Rev counter to give you the revs.

Have you hit the "DONATE" button at the bottom of the page after reading this post? Many thanks if you have!!

Garry,
I have only seen one Haflinger distributor map and that is labeled as Fig. 8/III in the factory repair manual. It is for Bosch distributor VJU 2 BR. If you do not have the manual available, the critical points on the graph are as follows:

RPM Advance in degrees
0 0
850 0
1000 9.0
1050 10.5
1500 10.5
2000 10.5
2100 13.0
2200 15.0
2300 16.0
2400 17.0
2500 18.0
3000 21.2
3500 24.0
4000 26.8
4500 29.4
4750 30.8
5000 30.8

The graph ends at 5000 rpm but extrapolation would appear to maintain 30.8 degrees of advance at 5200 rpm. The only true curve in the graph is the gentle arch between 2000 rpm and 2500 rpm. Keep in mind that the date on the test sheet is: 28.2.56

Hope this helps. Please tell us more about this distributor of yours when you get a chance.

Take care.

John - thanks for the tip but Jim has the information I was after.

Jim - that was exactly what I was after - I have an older manual but it does not have that information in it.

Thanks for your input - great stuff.

Cheers

Jim - my haflinger has a modified Fiat 500 123 Electronic Ignition. See Here http://www.123ignition.nl/id/32.html this is the handbook with map information http://www.123ignition.nl/downloads/man ... manual.pdf

Basically it has 16 preset maps and you select the one you want. It uses what was the distribute as a crankshaft sensor to tell the unit where TDC is.

From the map you posted there is a difference between available maps and the Haflinger one where the 123 has more advance at the top end and I am not sure of the impact on my engine.

The issue I have is that with a none standard ignition and a non standard carby I am having trouble resolving some tuning issues - loosing power at 4500rpm (like a governor but I do not have one) and issues on steep slopes (Carby?).

Here are some pics with the unit installed - notice no distrubutor cap - it has a coil pack to fire each spark plug.

I have something similar installed in my Pinzgauer. It has only 4 maps. I use the version that is nearest to the factory curve shown in the manual, and it runs great.
