Does anyone know what year they changed from round to oblong rear mirrors.

Did they ever? Certainly my UK spec 1972 LWB had round ones from he start. (The external "wing" mirrors that is).

My 1973 LWB had square mirrors, but I think they were "after market Landrover" ones as they did not really fit the mirror stems very well. They would not stay in the correct position even when tightened to the max!

I currently have some motorbike ones, which have a better method of fixing to the stem but, they are really too small and I will have to find some bigegr ones.
Maybe a combination of the Landrover ones and the motorbike ones!
