I have only just noticed this bracket / holder, located by the driver's knee & the brake reservoir (Right Hand Drive) - does anyone know what it is for?

Hi Julian & Garry,
This bracket is for the cold start petrol priming bottle. The theory was to squirt a little petrol into the carby throat to ease starting in extreme cold weather.
Here's a photo of the bottle. Later models were changed to a plastic bottle. The nozzle reverses into the bottle for storage.

Would it be just neat petrol (/"gas") in the can?

So where would you actually squirt the petrol - into the throttle body would imply you would have to pull the air filter housing off.

To answer your questions:
- Yes, it is just straight (neat) petrol in the bottle
- I don't recall the exact wording of the instructions for injecting the petrol but I think it suggested that the air duct must be lifted from the carb body. I don't know of any other means to prime the fuel delivery system since just removing the round paper filter cover would be too low to expect an effective delivery to the intake manifold.

Just for the record, I checked on my 1962 Haflinger today (with welded front end), and there is not such bracket.

I have a small tube that is blocked with a screw in the air intake housing directly above the carby - maybe this is the spot where the fuel is squirted in.

Although that would work it's not what the tube was designed for. You have a late production airbox that is designed for reduced emissions by circulating crankcase gases back through the motor intake (closed loop venting). This tube would have a rubber hose connected to the oil filler cap but I see your oil filler tube and cap are from an earlier model engine and so does not have the auxiliary fill cap and hose fittings.

Thanks Steve - the learning process for me continues on.

The oil filler cap on the engine has a large pipe that exhausts crankcase cases to the atmosphere underneath the engine. After reading your post I went out and rummaged through my box of spares that came with the car. I found two other oil filler caps like the one in your pic - the breather pipe on the side on one of the caps is only about a 1/4" in diameter - about the same size as the one on the side of my air intake housing in my pic and the second filler cap has a pipe about 1/2" in diameter coming out the side.

the closed breather system has an oil filler pipe with two caps, plus one screwtop - you can see it in Steve's picture. The lower cap has a bigger pipe, because it is connected to a larger oil backflow hose that is connected with the rhs valve cover backflow pipe.
I am quite sure that on your vehicle, the younger oil filler design was changed to an older one. It sometimes happens that the oil filler pipes start to leak, so maybe this was the reason for replacement.
