Found on Ebay .co.uk- Haflinger thing

Just seen this - might be of use to someone. Too far away for me to do anything with.

John

P.S. Just noticed there are currently a couple of Poly Cab fronts on there as well if any one is interested.

Curiosity: is the 1900 VW engine a replacement for a Haflinger engine, or does it share some components with the Hafi engine?

thanks

No. It is easier to mate to the Hafi bell housingthan other power plants, but it's too heavy, usually sits oddly, and could damage the drivetrain with the increase in torque/HP.

All the conversions I've seen done were done because it's cheap

The VW engine is much heavier than a Haflinger engine least of all because it is 4 cylinder and not 2.... but as mentioned it is a relatively cheap, plentiful option so if your original engine has died terminally it can seem like a good thing.

My own reservations about using it are that because it only really requires a mounting ring which converts the spacing of the Haflinger gearbox to engine mounting holes out to the bigger distance required by the VW engine, that no one bothers to support the extra rearward weight. So all the heavier VW engine's weight is carried on 4 studs designed for the Haflinger engine. That's a lot more weight "wagging" rear of the Haflinger, particularly off-road!

There are obviously lots of engines that could be fitted instead of the original. The BMW boxer engine would seem a good candidate, but is an old one a better fit than a new one? Don't know of any Haflinger with a current generation BMW engine in it.

The ideal engine would be one with similar physical size and weight, more power (& torque) and a higher rev limit. Toyota made a 2 stroke engine back in the '60's which might be a good swap but for the fact it is probably as difficult to come by as an original engine and being 2 stroke produced it's power by higher revs!

If you want to look at the VW mounting ring there are some pictures in the gallery at: http://www.haflingerandpinzgauerclubuk.org/
