Tempting

Post by AustHaflinger »

Should I or should I not - only 12 hours and 1200km drive (so a 2400km round trip) - to be auctioned this Thursday.

One basically complete, one complete with no engine and one for parts. The two better ones look as if they are long wheel base.

I might pass but if anyone in Aust wants a long trip out to the sticks tomorrow send me a PM and I will give you the information on these.

The one in the last picture looks like it has the PTO flap So might have a PTO set up underneath. Might be worth buying if the auction price is low enough, getting them back to "civilization" and offering them for sale again.

Hi Garry,

Wild horses couldn't drag me away from that auction if I were in your place.

I think the LWB with the lettering on the doors may have been featured in a car review magazine when it was new. I have a copy of the article and the lettering looks to me to be the same as does the vehicle's color. I assume the lettering was applied by the importers for advertising purposes or especially for the article. Very interesting set of trucks.

Cheers,
Steve

I have the same doors with lettering. I think they did it to all of them!

Steve - as Nigel mentioned the lettering was standard for a period of time on Aussie Haflingers on the hard doors.

I would expect these vehicles to go very cheap (farm vehicles like that often go for less than $500) and bidders will be competing with the local scrap metal merchants who have a notorious reputation in this country.

If they get them they will be crushed.

Also at this auction are a technical equivalent to the Haffie - the Austin Champ - there are about 6 of them both military and civilian.

Gary, I'm sure they will go cheap, I looked at the logistics and to get the 3 of them back I think you would definitely have to put them on a semi trailer. I doubt there are any back loads coming from Broken Hill, but I might be wrong. I would love them to go to a collector not the scrap merchants. Not enough time to organise. Sad. Danny

You would need a trailer capable of taking two back to back and then the third could be put on the platforms of both.... So double wheel long trailer? Some thing big to tow it? Pinz?
Or a 3 ton flatbed, two on the flatbed and one on a trailer?

If others are buying vehicles / farm machinery, maybe they have space on a truck?

As you say, time is is biggest issue when trying to organise collection of vehicles from an auction.

All three sold at auction to 3 separate buyers. SWB early series (pre-tropical intake) went to a buyer in St Arnaud, Victoria FZG 5305551. SWB series 2 incomplete unit went to Claire, Sth Australia. The LWB 703AP with minor surface rust and missing dyna-starter FZG 5503128 went to B.Callahan in Colac, Vic. Two series one engines sold as separate lot.

These went for much more than expected - probably far too much given the work required to get them going - not complaining as it makes mine more valuable. $1 Aust = $0.78USD and £0.51 pounds

Now glad I did not make the 3 day, 2500km round trip.

Haflinger Wheels $400

Haflinger $4100

Haflinger $3800

Haflinger (parts only) $1500

2 x Haflinger motors $700

Hi Gary,

Do you know what the Austin Champs went for? A mate of mine down in Wagga used to have one in the eighties. Great machine but heavy and very over-engineered.

Thanks.

Hi Doug - between $500 and $1100 - the buy of the century for the right one - but just as frustrating a vehicle technologically wise as the Haflinger.

I nearly bought one many many years ago but commonsense prevailed unlike when I got older :o

BUT!!!!!

The Haflinger has only one reverse gear. The Champ has a box full of reverse gears. Clearly they were hoping for International sales.

Glad I did not go also, very happy that they did not go to the scrap metal merchants, but goes to show that they are still well sought after and collectors will go to great lengths to get one. I thought the buy of the day was the two engines for $700. Hopefully 3 new members with stories to share. the days of barn/shed finds are getting rare. Danny
