Yes definitely not ex military - I think he is confused with the gun holder on the passenger side that all aussie hafs seemed to have optioned - mine certainly has one.

I have just joined the list to learn a bit about the breed.
I am watching the auction, but haven't got time the inspect it before the end.
It is just up the road , so if it doesn't make reserve I may mosey up and check it out.
Is there a list of "buyer beware" , genre specific stuff to look for anywhere on the site ?

Hi TGH,

Definitely not Army as all Aust Army haffy's are 1966.

Well definitely engine no blower the smoke.
Brake condition
Steering looseness.
Basically any movable part will have signs of ware. just depends on how much ware and slop in the joints etc:

Wheels don't look original but still look good.
Rust is a big concern. As most haffy's lived outside with no roofs or covers on in the good old days so rust usually sets in after 40 years.
One can hope that in QLD it has not been in salt water. Body still looks good from the pic's though.

It is best to contact the owner prior to auction finishing and get his details.
It is easier to get his/her details before they disappear after the auction finishes.
I find sometimes Ebay block email after the auction closes as behind the seen private deals they miss out on the cash grab from Ebay sales.

Had to tell from the pic's other than it looks a clean unit.

Just depends how mush you want to pay?

Good luck

Brad

Hi TGH,

As Brad has said, anything on the drive train that moves when it shouldn't and doesn't move when it should will probably cost you a fair amount to sort out.
Engine - no horrible noises, smoke Charging light goes out when running, Oil light goes out when running.
Gearbox - All gears work with no jumping out of gear when driving.
4 wheel drive - does it work?
Do the front and rear Diff locks work?
Pivot pins on the differential sides for the drive shaft can have a little bit of play in them, but not too much.
Brakes should work and not pull to one side or lock one wheel before the others.
Bodywork - Rust is the Killer.
Check the side rails for straightness - They have been known to bend in the middle due to overloading!

Then it depends on how original you want it to start with (it is always possible to return it to original, but that cost lots of money). Seats, wheels are not original for starters.

I am sure there are lots of other things as well, but there's a quick list.

John

Thanks for the welcome and the feedback.
I am not really ready to buy yet and philosophically would probably prefer to buy a finished product rather than a project.

Where? In Australia or the world?

Not that I know of any where. If there is a specific club in the country in question, it might have a list of members but that won't be a list of all the Haflingers in the country.

There is a list on the au Haf club site, but it may not be current.
There is a probably a haf somewhere with my name on it….
I guess it's alla same many vehicles, lots were made but few remain.
In a long life I have had through my hands , dozens of old wheels that would today be revered.
(we used to buy them off the local GMH dealer for peanuts and have fun trashing them…sigh)

Unfortunately I dont think the Club site is maintained any longer.

I am sure there is a vehicle with your name on it. Ebay, Shannons, Gumtree are the obvious places to look - here as well as we often get intelligence on what is on offer. Clearing sales listings are another place to keep an eye out for as well.

Keep looking :)

The actual Club died many, many, many years ago. Rick K (Rick Karosi) started the current Club Website in an attempt to use it as a means to resurrect the club but while various people contributed information to the website the Club did not come back together - one of the main reason is how spread out Haflinger membership is with only one or two active vehicles in any one location.

A couple of years ago we tried to have a meet and greet in Lane Cove but there was no interest so it did not happen.

Rick's interest in Haflingers has moved to other Steyr products and while the "Club" site he built is still activated I dont think he is maintaining it any longer but I could be wrong - but I dont think the actual club has existed for about 30 years.

I am happy to be a financial member of a new Club but am not in a position to be a driving force behind one - the tyranny of distance is an issue for such a club as there needs to be a core of interested people in one general location to sustain it for interstate members. For example there are only two "confirmed" haflingers (there are rumors of one other) in a city the size of Canberra (myself and Matt (Purecordial) and there are not many in Sydney or Melbourne so makes setting up a club difficult.

I (and my Haf) are attached to the Series section of the local Landrover Club and I think Matt has been a member as well at various times.

So in short - there is no Club and not likely to be one - networking in Aust is mainly through this forum as well seem to have more Aussie members than just about any other country.

tgh,

Can you fill out a bit more of your profile please? Putting you general location will help other members as this is an international membership based forum.

Thanks,
