Looks like a civilian Series 1 Haflinger to me... "typical" earlier Australian Haflinger with rear light compartment similar to the CH-Army version. The raised air vent on the back was also usual on these years of make. However there is a wrong lower engine door fitted (the original should have closed vents), so the whole assembly makes no sense.

Anyway, the body doesn't look too bad to me - anyone going to buy and restore the Haflinger? :-)

Kind regards,
Constantin

Great find. I suspect this is from the first shipment to Australia in 1963. I know of two others from this batch, and will compare chassis numbers with the two others.

well I just checked the chassis number- this 63 Haflinger (APT) is 5355921. My 63 AP is 5355477, ex-Tasmanian Hydro Haflinger (APTL) is 5355750, and the other Haflinger (APTL) of this year I know of is from Guyra in NSW with chassis number 5355856 (stamped 1963)- so very close. Also I was given information on two others , 5355751 (made 13 May 1963) and 5355835 (records say made 13 February 1964???). Looking at export records from Constantins website, the first major consignment of 54 vehicles was shipped to Australia in 1963, and a further 22 in 1964. So its possible that this haflinger on ebay is from the first batch(s) of Haflingers imported into Australia, but of course there may have been more than one batch shipped in 1963. Im still trying to obtain the import records to confirm.

These early tropical models are unique with the raised tropical air vents (taller than the Austrlian Army variant), platen bumbers (the front one still exisits on the ebay Haflinger, only brackets remain at the rear) and that the rear stop/tail lights in the body have been blanked off with a plate and Swiss Army tail lights fitted (with trafficator) onto mud guards likely to comply with local laws (although the rear lights on the ebay Haflinger dont appear to be the Swiss Army type). To me this is a great find in good condition for a restoration.

Sold with just one bid for the listed price. I would have liked to have bid but with 3 other major car projects lying around I refrained.

But I am now totally confused - this looked like a good project that would not have taken a lot to get back on the road unrestored and get some enjoyment out of it until ready to restore. I thought it would have gone for a lot more with serious bidding in the last minute or so but it just did not happen.

Did any one on here get it?

Cheers

At the equivalent of around GBP 2,750 that is a bargain!

I had a kinda busy day [massive understatement] & last minute school function we forgot about = I forgot to really decide to bid!
I often do this & find the last minute think about it really decides if its what I want. I read the above positive informaton, but $4700 for the not right car ends up being a waste, so Ill wait for a 5 speed & maybe even a LWB! I find patience ends up working out in the long run.

I think it is a case of only existing Haffy owners appreciating the amount of work and expense to get a cheap rusty one up to this state.

Sadly, existing Haffy restorers probably have enough of them already.

I think this was a good buy- hoping we get to find out who the buyer was for our Register. There was minimal rust, and so as Gary said, there is less work required than with most we come across.

I suspect that there was little interest because she was an early 4 speed model, where for reasons of practicality the 5 speed models appeal to more people (Nigels point). Personally the rarity of this model makes this one highly desirable, but I already have a 63 tropical haffy from this same year.

as a side point other than the crawler gear on the 5 speed, are the ratios in the four speed lower than 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th in the 5 speed. I appreciate hub gears are lower in the 4 speed.

Cheers

Gary,

There was a farm clearence sale at Mt Emu last WE. The bank had forclosed on the property and everything went under the hammer. The owner had purchased a Haffy 20 years ago and had sat in a shed ever since. It had about 1/2inch of dust on it. Any way I got it for spare parts. By the time I get bits from OS that I'm missing it's cheaper to buy a complete Haffy. The motor is in many bits as it came seperate in a wooden crate.

The auctioneer said there was much interest in it and many phone inquiries from over seas.

The thing this that got me off side is that when I went to pay they added GST so by the time I got it home and took out expenses for the extra bit of cash the ebay one would have been easier to buy with a complete motor and better body.

It's a 1971 still with the origional plates attached. Done just over 21,000kms Pic's below

Hi Brad - I suppose they hit you with buyers premium as well.

I don't know how they can charge GST as if you bought it any other way it would be GST exempt - you certainly don't pay GST on ebay.

It looks as if there is a bit of rust in the tub. Parts - I will have the hourmeter and the tow bar :o

Good luck with it. No doubt Rick will want details for the register.

Cheers

Hi I Was the lucky bidder who won this little blue haffie on eBay. Only problem is I carnet seem to get a pick up address and an invoice out of the seller. Luckily i havnt paid any money as he wanted me to pay via Paypal and once i advised id pay via eft he became extremely vague. I'm just hoping the saying " if it seems to good to be true......." will not come to be the situation. I'll keep you posted and hope to be able to contribute if the car turns up. Fingers crossed.

In that situation I would pay cash on pick up. This way you avoid also avoid the paypal fee as well.
Did they ever answer the question emails?

It was lucky there was no buyers prem in mine.

Good luck.

Michael and Brad

Congratulations on your new Haflingers! I look forward to your progress with them, and I would be keen to get the chassis and engine numbers for the Register.

Michael, I have a Haflinger of the same vintage also in Sydney if you need any help, ideas etc. I also use a motorcycle courier to cart Haflingers between cities if you need any contacts for that.

Rick,

The plate on the chassie is removed. I have cross checked the engine number with the old rego lable, pic attached.
Engine number is 5364313 as per the rego lable.

It would be good to get all the details.
