eBay Haflinger Pathfinder

Post by cascade.king »

Just noticed this one..
(No association with the seller)

Pretty rough. Not sure it's anything other than a parts vehicle.
But.. If you are brave and talented..

Not sure what the motor is in the pics.. Doesn't appear to be Steyr-Puch.

Mike,

Interesting find. What we need now are more details on the engine, more pictures form the other side etc. It looks like it might be a good conversion if the engine can be identified and is easy enough to get hold of. I would also like to see pictures of the clutch / gearbox mounting to see how that is done.

I have sent the buyer an email asking, but I am not sure the buyer will bother for an "oversea buyer" without several emails going back and forth. Any chance you can ask as well?

Many thanks,

John

The seller says;
"The Boxer motor is from the Haflinger, have also a Jeep motor on there.
Somebody mounted a Kohler engine in it that runs,
try to post some more Pictures."

Um, not sure which motor he's talking about. If there is a Kohler mounted inside, and I'm pretty sure the motor on the tire is NOT a Jeep motor.. There are still questions..

Hopefully they will post more pics..

...Says he with the FC101

We Bug Eye Haf owners feel the look adds to the "cute" factor.

The seller has added 3 more pictures to the Ebay ad. Even more confusing now.... It looks like it has a Kohler motor installed with what looks like a piece of chip board as the adapter plate on to the clutch / gearbox.
I have no idea what the engine is on top of the tyre is! Maybe another Kohler engine? I thought they were either single / V-twin or 3/4 cylinder inline diesels?
Maybe it is an engine from a dumper truck or an ex-stationary engine?

Per the ad;
"One Bidder Mentioned that Motor in Picture is not Original. NO Original Motor Included
Previous Owner installed a Kohler Engine, see Pictures.
Still a Rarity in great Condition, Hard to Find.
Not Restored in Running Condition are anywhere From $ 12000.- to $ 20000.-
When you can find one."

Reeeeeeeeeaaaaallllllyyyy? Wow. So what did this knowledgeable appraiser of antique autos set as his reserve? Time will tell, I guess.

I firmly stand behind the "parts car" opinion on this one. I think John may be right regarding the way that Kohler motor was mounted... yikes.(Its a chunk of steel.. but still ugly)

And by the way Garry, your headlamp envy is showing.. but I know you can't help it that yours are small..

I wonder if that motor is of comparable weight of the original?

As I don't see any form of bracing to help hold the motor in place! The means that ALL the weight of that engine is hanging on 4 bolts through the bell housing. What a weight to waggle on the end when going up and over rough ground!

Having said that, it does still appear to have the sump guard, although that is only fastened at the front with two bolts which allow it to pivot up and down.....

Its just on there with the 4 little bolts, and its COG is further back. Also, that Kohler unit looks to be a few inches off the ground.

As for the sump guard, I don't think it does have it, at least not fully. I don't see it when looking down between the motor and the bell housing at that chunk of angle-iron. It should go all the way back to the bottom of the engine.

Having had another look at the pictures, I think I am wrong in saying it is a piece of chip board.... A second look suggests it is a piece of Angle Iron which goes under the engine.
What I though was the sump guard is actually the bottom bit of the Angle Iron. So I am still puzzled by lack of any rear bracing, but there again, if that is a Kohler motor then it is likely to be one of the lower power units ~ 23 to 30bhp as it does not match any of the engines in their current catalogue.

Still, for all we know it - it might go very well!

I firmly stand behind the "parts car" opinion on this one.
I'm with you on this one. Having taken a careful look at each of the photos using the mouse-over zoom feature this truck shows some extremely severe rot in many critical areas. So how much is a questionable pair of diffs, gearbox and central tube worth?
I just don't see anything else here worth slogging home. Hopefully neither Seller nor Buyer gets too much disappointment in this deal.
Cheers,
Steve
