Re: Those limit straps....
Ok,here goes! A wacky idea for increasing weight to improve handling. If you don't use your rear seats, remove them. Line the rear foot wells with a release agent and or plastic, then fill them with concrete and a small section of rebar, add a knoted rope handle before it dries. You will the then h...

Re: Those limit straps....
If you get a good load on them, lots of the issues people seem to have with suspension compliance suddenly become non-issues. Since I've had my Haffy I've been constantly thinking of means to reduce the weight, the rationale being that it would improve performance off (and on) road. Nothing gets lu...

Re: Those limit straps....
Looks like it turned out ok, but the truth will be seen on the trail. Hey CZ - that strap looks damn fine; I've been following this topic with interest as my Haf has chains in place of the straps. They seem to work well and despite being aware of others concerns about shock-loading on full extensio...

Re: So what are you folks using for transmission gear oil no
John - re your statements, I would urge some caution particularly with GL4/GL5 oils (which to some may appear 'similar'); if you use a GL5 (containing sulpher) in a transmission with white metal syncromesh it is highly likely to cause significant damage in a short period of time. (the sulpher eats a...

Re: So what are you folks using for transmission gear oil no
I've heard about the increased risk of leaks when using synthetic oils to replace mineral but never experienced it myself. I replaced the oils about a year or so ago as part of routine servicing (no rebuild) and all appears to be fine (I'm fortunate that my Haf appears to be fairly oil-tight with on...

Re: So what are you folks using for transmission gear oil no
Hi Cz - I've had great results using Castrol Syntrax full synthetic 75/90 - it's pricy but worth it; it doesn't seem to thicken up when cold as much as conventional mineral oils - means smoother shifting and less power loss (important when you don't have that much to start with!)

Re: hard to start my haflinger
Thanks Fred – I did some research – seems the Tatou 4S is the all-season option to go for; they are not very available in this country (UK) and are damned expensive! I found one retailer who could supply, but at a cost of almost £4000 – no second-hand kit available. You did well to get yours for $10...

Re: hard to start my haflinger
Wow Fred, I'm seriously impressed! - tell me more about your tracks. They look similar to Mattracks - are they Haflinger specific, available, cost much, speed restricted, rob power, easily fitted/removed, etc? Sorry for all the questions, but apart from a very old U-tube video this is the first chan...

Re: hard to start my haflinger
Hi Fred - the Bosch plugs I use are W7AC (they're one range hotter than the equivalent NGK B7HS and I found them less prone to fouling).
Here's a link to a thread that discusses plugs/problems and timing.

Re: The 'Off-Road' picture thread
Might also fab a couple of doors up...that area can get mighty cold with some high winds. If you're inclined and got the time post up what you do about the doors. There are a number of options that you could consider - metal-frame, etc. For info, I made up a set last year - I was going to get a loc...

They do, reasonably priced too - it's just a damn shame they don't do a 12" version.

Re: hard to start my haflinger
If I'm interpreting your post correctly that must mean that starting from cold is a two person operation - that must be inconvenient! If it really floods from cold then it might not be your carb cold-start circuit - if the plugs are wet it's likely getting enough fuel; initially I would be inclined ...

Re: The 'Off-Road' picture thread
Hi Cz - here's the link to the thread where i was exploring the options.. http://www.thehaflinger.com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=3102 There were three options.. 1. Buy secondhand 2. Band the original wheels (certainly doable and works out at about £50 ($80ish) per wheel) 3. Custom made (haven't had a ...

Re: The 'Off-Road' picture thread
Next big testing area will be Mojave during a big rock crawling comp, I go there to spectate each year. This year if I can get the Haf reliable enough I'm going to mount a mast over the rear with a GoPro camera mount and do some video. Should be fun, hope it works, might test it here first to see w...

Re: The 'Off-Road' picture thread
Good pic - I love seeing them being used off-road! How are you finding the Haf with these new tyres - great grip in the mud I bet - what about on hard surfaces? (Much vibration, increased rolling resistance, etc?)

Re: Synthetic oil
I know (from experience) that the sulpher in GL5 will degrade the white metal that are used in gearbox syncromesh so do not use it there. Personally I've had good experience using Castrol Syntrans 75/90 fully synthetic throughout - it's quite pricy/litre but does aid smooth shifting and protection; ...

(PS you might notice that there's no glass in the windscreen - I broke both sides taking it out of the trailer - D'oh!) Please explain :? Looks like a great event and lots of fun - I am surprised that the bogged Nissan Patrol has registration with those wheels and tyres. Garry Ah, yes... haruuumph....
