Re: Leads on antique electric motor rebuild shops in Califor
Labor costs are the killer. If it does have a bad winding, I'll rewind it myself. The same place has all the supplies and the owner said he'd be happy to give some pointers too, he's dealt with antique motors quite a bit. Once it's back together he'll also load test it for me. I've already done cont...

Re: Leads on antique electric motor rebuild shops in Califor
Update: Dropped off the stripped down case at a local rebuilder I found. He'll pull the plates, desolder the #30 post, and I'll pick it up and fiddle with it to extend the wires leading from the windings, as they are too short currently (HA! See what I did there? Clever, eh? ) to resolder ont...

Re: Leads on antique electric motor rebuild shops in Califor
Thank you very much for the kind offer, John. Hopefully, though, I'll be able to repair it locally. Sounds very pricy for the rebuild! Tearing this unit down, it's actually very simple, major issue to me are the old materials being used in it, and whether or not a local shop knows not to use harsh c...

Leads on antique electric motor rebuild shops in California?
OK, gotten into the Dynastarter enough to see what's going on. My best solution, as long as it's not crazily expensive, would be to let a repair shop handle it. Has anyone had any Dynastarter rebuilds done in California? If not in CA, how about USA in general? Any shops better than others? I see tha...

Re: Dynastarter is apart...as I thought, broken lead to #30
Yep, if there's room that's the easiest. Another way I've done it in the past is to whip the wires after they're butted. Then solder over it. The whipping gives it some mechanical strength, and the solder gives a good path. I'll clean it and look at it again, but there's really not much room to work...

Re: Dynastarter is apart...as I thought, broken lead to #30
Good idea there. Another one I was thinking about was using a plumbers iron, I think I've got a few around here I could use. Lots of cleaning to do, for some of the stuff I'll be using the ultrasonic, but what I've found by reading some of the old tractor forums I'm on is to use paint thinner as a c...

Dynastarter is apart...as I thought, broken lead to #30
But the amount of carbon...holy geez. I was going to use an electrical stator cleaner to get the gunk off (CRC Lectra-Clean), but before I do go that route, does anyone have a better cleaning idea? I've already done a very gentle brush off, followed by low pressure air. This really needs some kind o...

Re: Finally, back in
LOL, magic smoke came out of dynastarter. That's probably not good, eh? :D Time to tear that down, the positive starter post was somewhat loose and I'm thinking that a short happened. I did find a dynastarter rebuild article from an Isetta guy, I'll have to dig through that and see if it's any help....

Re: Finally, back in
Engine turns over just fine, I'm pretty sure it's the starter solenoid contacts. Dynastarter brushes test out fine, and when I spin it by hand it registers a bit of voltage production on the meter. I manufactured new battery cables, except for one that I re-used. I'll break down the solenoid today a...

Re: Finally, back in
All back in, looks great....and doesn't want to turn over. LOL.
Pulling dynastarter now, checking brushes and continuity. Hopefully that's what it is from sitting for so long. In any case, can't hurt to check brushes, etc. That'll be one thing eliminated.

CV joints....question about the older and newer...
So on the Swiss '63 I have, the front CV bellows are rotten and in dire need of replacement, along with the CV needing flushing, lube and assessing to see if it's worth keeping or needs replacing. I see that the later models have a completely sealed metal housing, instead of the rubber bellows. Can ...

Re: Finally, back in
The Invacar engines also were not fitted with governor. I thought initially that from the photo it was one from that application. They were also 500 cc, believe some were unofficially converted to 650 using Haflinger parts. One of the ones I have recently stripped has the late type spin on oil filt...

Haflingers in the movies...
Just perusing the net, looking at haflinger images, and came across one from a movie, thought you folks might enjoy a screencap, it's from 1963. https://photos.smugmug.com/Haflinger/i-XNwP3mm/0/XL/heimweh%20nach%20dir%20gruene%20tal%20film%20still-XL.jpg Anyone else have any other movie content out ...

Re: Finally, back in
Thanks for the comments, I'll post up a vid once it's up and running.
Jhon - I bought it without the governor, so I've never gotten used to one. I run it by ear, but I'm not in the habit of pushing limitations either, I'm well out of that age group

Re: Finally, back in
Just need to top off oil, triple check connections, and I think I'll have time tomorrow to light it off. Then the cleaning continues. If I'm lucky it'll be on the rolling under it's own power this weekend! https://photos.smugmug.com/Haflinger/i-SMnqTB8/0/XL/20170306_160827-XL.jpg https://photos.smug...

Re: Finally, back in
80mm on this. Eric from the puch 500 forum said the 500 block is easily built into a 650, and that's what was done with this one.
