Re: Australian Army Haflinger Restoration

In the UK a registration ending in a "J" would be ~1970. (First registered between 01-AUG-70 to 31-JUL-71 to be precise).

Re: Engine strip down.

I have once again been checking my measurements, and I really hope that I have got them right this time ... The camshaft gear diameter is 118mm The crankshaft measures 49mm where the two main bearings sit, so I would need to buy "full size" replacements Both big end bearings measure 45mm, ...

Re: Engine strip down.

If you assemble flywheel, crankshaft and main bearing and there is a resulting gap of about 0.3 (or 0.4 mm with copper gasket), I cannot understand where the end float of 2 - 3 mm mentioned in your first post comes from. I will double check all of my measurements tomorrow, but I did notice that end...

Re: Engine strip down.

Armed with a new set of micrometer screw gauges I have been doing some more measuring. My main bearing does have worn slightly worn flange (the side that touches the flywheel), and this therefore gives a width of between 25.40-25.32mm. So 0.08mm could be "found" if I used a new bearing. Wi...

Re: Engine strip down.

Thanks again everyone; I'll have another play with the components in the morning and let you know what I find.

Re: Engine strip down.

Thanks, Steve. I have now gone off the idea of using a #5 camshaft, and will stick with the spare #2 that I have, as it is a) the "right" one for the engine and carb etc, and b) the cheaper option. The cogs are a matched pair, and the teeth in very good condition. I have remeasured the Mai...

Re: Engine strip down.

OK, I have had another look at the engine components; I can answer some of the questions asked above, but I now have some more to ask! * My crankshaft is 49mm diameter, and this narrows down which Main Bearings I would need (see below) * The Big End shims need replacing with 49/45 diameter shims (50...

Re: Engine strip down.

Hi Julian, I am not sure what camshaft was fitted to the Invacar engines, but you may check that as well. I agree that the toothing was possibly damaged by the axial play, but I also suffered from end float on my engine and the gearwheels came out like new. Maybe they didn't have to run for long un...

Re: Engine Governor

(Until I have actually driven mine for a while and suffered from the restrictions of the governor, I shall leave it on - but if it gets in the way - it will come off!) John, That is a good point; until you have heard / felt what the engine sounds like when the governor kicks in I would agree that l...

It was certainly possible to activate the governor on my father's Halfinger when I was 14  :D

Re: Engine Governor

I will admit to having disconnected the governor on my Haflingers; I reckon that they were more relevant to preventing abuse by conscripted National Service people in Austria & Switzerland than by the average owner-driver 50 years later! Whilst I don't have a rev counter it is all too obvious if...

Re: Engine strip down.

Thanks everyone; I will do some more cleaning today, and will check the cam & crank wheel numbers. Judging by the known end float / axial float, and the absence of any damage on the cam lifters etc I would be tempted to think that the cog damage was done by the relative axial movement between th...

Engine strip down.

My engine has been making a fairly dreadful noise for some time now, so I have removed the engine for inspection repair. I split the crank case open today, and (having already found a load of metal "bits" in the oil yesterday) see that the large cog on the camshaft and the small cog on the...

Re: Can I "degrease" the distributor?

I have now drenched & cleaned the distributor; I didn't remove the springs & balance mechanism, but everything else came out. A quick follow up question ... Between the inside wall of the distributor and the outer edge of the curved sprung metal "blade" is a piece of waxed paper(?)...

Many thanks both - I will continue with the component cleaning in the morning. Great tip about using the compressor to blow out / dry the degreaser too ;)

Can I "degrease" the distributor?

Hi all, I have begun the task of stripping down my engine as it has been making a very bad noise, and I now find that there are bits of metal in the oil filter. So far all I have done is remove the engine from the Haf, and strip off most of the main components. I have not yet split the crank...

Re: Another new member

I'm based just a few miles south of Inverness; plenty of wild country around here though not many places that you can drive without permission. I'm planning to do the Speyside Way walk (Buckie to Aviemore) in early May - are you far from there? I love the area, and have been several times. Some sup...

What battery?

I need to new battery for my Haflinger; the existing unbranded one is 35 amp/hour, and is labelled "270 cold crank amps". Both terminals are along the same long side, with the negative terminal to the left when they are closest to you. Dimensions (mm) - 250 (L) x 175 (H*) x 135 (D). (*= ex...

Re: Another new member

Hi John, welcome to the forum. Your Haf looks very nice indeed!. You say it is 1973 - and the reg confirms it, but the style of side indicator, the tyre tread pattern and possibly the shallow rear footwell sort of suggest that not all of it dates to 1973? Or am I seeing things in the photo that aren...
