Re: What did you do with your Haflinger today?
Yes , Petronix do say to check, so my issue not theirs. I don't have a multi metre down the beach where the Huffapuffa lives, I didn't really expect my coil to be out of the range, though I've yet to check that, so it still may be something else, however unlikely that is.
However instructions are quite crap as to fitting the unit, but that would also be down to experience. They also say get an auto elect to fit if not sure.
It's just if you own a Haffy , you are the mechanic....
Experience always costs....

A very basic multimeter will only cost $10 from repco or supercrap or even Bunnings

One note on Pertronix installs, there are 3 basic types of distributor, Cast iron, aluminum, and Mil spec aluminum.
For Mil spec units, you may need to add a spacer under the module as the magnet ring sits higher on these shafts. I use a small nut or washer under the module screws to raise it up to align with the magnet .

Re: What did you do with your Haflinger today?
I do have to agree with Nigel about the quality of the instructions - they are atrocious and I had to do a few test fits to work out the right way of fitting the thing - to me the only clear bit is the bit about the coil resistance - sorry Nige . Also note the warning of not leaving the ignition on as it will burn out the unit.
I also agree with John - the thing needs to be not so fragile, afterall it is in a car - ignitions do get left on, coils do short and may show less than 3 ohms.
Having said all that mine seems to be working well.
Garry

Re: What did you do with your Haflinger today?
Yep my fault!! any way sent email to Pertronix in Australia to try & buy the ignitor on its own. Might also get a coil from them.
I put the ignitor in the same position as the points. so basically ignore the fitting instructions!
At least i was able to set the points, though no feeler guage :-00, but I did have a timing light as until I finally fix up one of the two Alfasuds I have recycling in a back yard my other stuff is all electronic.
I also cleaned the earth point under the coil and WOW it starts so much easier. I used to not be able to start with the clutch in, now no probs, and with timing set she pulls a ton of wood up the hill no worries.
My poor Huffapuffa really gets a hard time! Nearly finished moving the last of the wood (tea tree & red gum0 to the new wood piles & then Ill start ordering the bits to get it registered - ball joints, lights, exhaust, indicator stalk,, windscreen, speedo cable etc

Re: What did you do with your Haflinger today?
Any old coil designed for older vehicles that does not need a ballast resistor will work - I have a Bosch GT 40 coil - about $40 from Repco or Supercheap - just do not get the R version that needs to operate with a ballast resistor.blazing928 wrote:Might also get a coil from them.

But put an ohm meter (multimeter) across the low tension terminals to make sure it is over 3 ohms - mine was about 3.3ohms.

Shall do before i take it down to the beach.
the Pertronix Flamethrower coils are about $40, might get a 1.5ohm just to be sure, or will that cause other problems?

Must have more than 3.0 ohms for Pertonix units, less will fry the unit.

After all the work you have done on your Haflinger I wouldn't have thought you could afford a new car. Very nice.

Re: What did you do with your Haflinger today?
The internet was not round ( well not part of my wold ) when I tried to register my Haflinger as an over snow vehicle. Here is how I went about it. It did not work but being the 80s & the staff knowing my history with our First built Snowmobile 64 to &75 & skidoos 75 onwards they let me use it for the season but it did not work . That was why I acquired the other haflinger to build a half track out of it but ran out of time & just stuck with skidoos till late 90s./Users/Ianward/Desktop/Haflinger in the 1980 & beyond Ian Ward - Small.mov

Ably assisted by a good friend we put up some Post & Rail fencing yesterday; the Haflinger proved an ideal cart horse bringing the wood up from the yard.

Re: What did you do with your Haflinger today?
The weekend being a bit drier allowed me to do some things with Lurch, basically a set of hoops made from stuff I have to hand rather than bought specifically for the task. Only things bought specifically are the tarpaulin, tarpaulin eyelets and some shock cord which I still have to fit.
The tarpaulin will have to be trimmed a bit along each side and then I have to figure out how to make the rear door!
John
(and Lurch feeling a bit like a horse in a cold winters field with a horse blanket on)
